Is Baldur's Gate really popular?

I was thinking about this during the day and i've got some doubts about the popularity of the series. Do you think Baldur's Gate is popular? Even during the period when the games came out?

What value do you think a mod to randomize most NPC and magic item locations would have?

I am curious to know from any on the forum, Would you enjoy a mod which would randomly determine the locations of most of the NPCs that could join the party (except those absolutely essential to the story line like
Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid...). Also, most of the special magic items that most players metagame (because we know where to find them) would now be distributed more randomly.

If you asked me it would have great replay value, and it would increase the feeling of adventure and wonder each time out. Who will meet (if anybody) you on the way to the FAI in the first chapter? What kind of weapon will the bounty hunter in the Prism encounter carry this time?

Would it make any sense to suggest this game to the modders?

Some Sounds Are Far Too Loud?

I thought this might have been raised in the bug forum, but surprisingly to me it isn't, so I'd like to pose the question here - has anyone else experienced the following:

I find that certain sounds, most obviously and repetitively that of magic missile impacts and the healing spell noise, are much too loud, and make it very hard to adjust the volume to a level conducive to easy listening.

I find that that setting the "Sound Effects" volume slider to 10% makes the above two sounds roughly in line with what you'd expect when the "Voice" volume slider is set at 70% - however this makes all other of the other sound effects almost inaudible.

I don't think I should have to set most sounds to a ridiculously low level just so that magic missiles and healing spells don't blow out my eardrums.

If NPC mages are assigned to a specialist school....

What school should Imoen, Nalia and Aerie be assigned to?

Imoen -> Enchanter b/c high Cha
Aerie -> Abjurer b/c high Wis
Nalia -> Not sure, maybe Transmuter?

So let's talk about the Black Pits (spoilers)

First of all, sorry if this topic is now old, but as you guys know, this board's search isn't very useful and I can't seem to find a walkthrough for this part of the game around the web.

I wasn't thrilled at all when the Black Pits was announced for BG:EE as I'm not very keen on arena-style games. However, being indecisive as usual about my next game, and being somewhat of a closeted powergamer, I decided to make a party and give it a go.

My first impression is that the battles were easier than I expected. I didn't lose once apart from the final fight with Baeloth. I thought maybe it's because I've been playing BG for a long time, but then again, I was never very good with combat strategy. The fight with the warriors from Thay killed most of my group, until my Dwarf Barbarian came out of Domination and slaughtered what was left of their group on his own. That was fun.

However, after finally defeating Baeloth, I had everyone but my Sorcerer and Archer down, including a very unfortunate petrified Kensai in pieces. The rakshasa whose name escapes me now just wouldn't go down.

Needless to say, after that fight was over I had no chance against any other foes. That's the part I'd like you guys to spoil me.

So the genie leaves me to wander around a little bit, and after a while the gnome who sells scrolls (he's a gnome, right?) comes in. I'm ashamed to admit I fleed. The ending also hints at a fight with the approaching clan of Duergars. So... does that battle happen? Does it change the ending at all? I'm curious.

Share your Black Pits impressions here if you are bored. I'd love to read them.

Noober, the greatest NPC ever?

The Curse of The Beggar *Minor Spoilers*

So, me and a friend picked up Baldur's Gate and started playing together. I rolled a Sorcerer, he rolled a thief. All was well.
We went through prologue, and suddenly we found ourself in a slightly precarious situation.
With no money, food or home my good friend decided, being a thief and of evil alignment, that it was time to go robbing.
Sadly, he hadn't put a very high score into pickpocketing and kept failing, making the intended victims go hostile, and forcing us to kill them to silence them.

"We need the money, Cin" he said. "Yah right, we'll come to regret this, you know...." I said.
"You worry too much!" he said.

I had no idea how right I was.

After a failed attempt to pickpocket a beggar (I know, but we were desperate!), we were chased out of town by the guards, forced to live as common bandits in the woods, yada yada yada.

A few hours of gameplay later, we realized something was amiss. Just at the edge of our vision, we could sometimes spot movement. A hunched figure in rags were following us....

image

We didn't pay much attention to it at the time, we had bigger problems to deal with (such as being hunted by various bounty hunters and guards, and wildlife trying to chomp on us), but eventually we chased down and caught our stalker. It was The Beggar.

image

I was perplexed. My friend was highly disturbed. At this time, we had become reliant on Minsc to plow through our enemies for us (As we ourselves had spectacularly failed at rolling viable characters). But with our already dangerously low reputation poor Minsc couldn't handle the pressure of killing an "innocent beggar" (HAH!) so we decided to let him be. Man was that the wrong decision.

It was at this stage that shit began hitting the fan.

After encountering the beggar a few more times (with my friend becoming increasedly disturbed and afraid of the half-naked stalker), we ran into something peculiar.

image

The Thing had multiplied.

My friend was now sure it was a horror haunting him for his past crimes, and he had started to whimper at the sighting of the things. But it got worse. Oh, so much Worse.

It didn't stop at three. Or nine. Or twentyseven. No, Soon they were everywhere. Out in the wilderness, in bandit dens, in the sewers, buried in tombs... it didn't matter. They were always there. Hiding in corners. Always watching.

Sometimes we woke up after resting to find them standing in a cluster around our party, staring at us, before dispersing. Sometimes we found hidden pockets of them in shadowy areas of the map. It was an infestation.

At this point the party's thief became a gibbering wreck at each encounter, and admittedly I was beginning to break aswell. It was simply too much. The emotional pressure, minsc dissaproving stare at my hands itching to throw fireballs all over the place.

image

My friend became numb to the horror, As I myself slowly descended into madness. Only dejectedly nodding in agreement as I burst out crying when rounding a corner to find them waiting.

Then it went from a horrifying nightmare.... and turned into Living Hell.

image

The way was shut. No way through.

With a banshee wail of frustration and insanity, my character snaps and she electrocutes Minsc on the spot, before commencing the tossing fireballs and exploding skulls at every figure in sight wearing loincloth. Thief joins in wearing a grim smile, dealing vengeance with gusto.

The Horde descends upon us.

The gnomes die in the chaos. Dorn tries to hold them off, but without Minsc to cover his back he gets surrounded, and eventually succumbs to the stackup of 1 damage hits. I incinerate and electrocute and whatever else that deals immediate and satisfying DEATH to the deamonspawn. They keep coming. Eventually I run out of spells. I'm swarmed.

Heed my warning, all who hear me. Don't repeat our mistakes. Kill it with fire before it grows to consume you all.

Will Dragon Disciple get any more feats or abilities beyond level 20?

$

I noticed that Dragon Disciple won't get any cool abilities beyond level 20. That's kinda unfair isn't it? What's there to compensate for the loss of less high level spells cast per day? I am talking about less Level 7~9 spells and HLAs. More spells cast at these levels out weights all the current feats for DS. Besides, unlike the other classes, Sorcerer's HLA aren't special abilities that cast from a different tab. We use our level 9 spell slots to cast them.
So -1 spell cast per day actually hits even harder at higher levels. Will there be new feats added to DS beyond level 20?

Thanks for reading this. I am a player from Taiwan and sorry if I make any grammar mistakes.

Question on Multi and Dual classing...at the same time...CHEATING

I have not messed with Shadowkeeper or gate keeper at all in regards to BGEE and have a question about the possibility of this idea...if anyone knows I'd like to know as well.

Is it possible to create a Human multi-class then dual him to a single class?

For example make a Human multi-classes Fighter/Thief...hit like lvl 3,6,9,13 (you know the drill), and then dual him to lets say a mage. Would this work? I thought this would a be a very interesting playthrough. And by work I mean the game doesn't crash and burn eating my computer.

Scs mage using wizard eye?

Been an avid fan of Sword Coast Strategems (scs) mod for long, and I wanted to share something cool I discovered.

I was discovering the Firewine ruins, and my Shadowdancer was travelling from shadow to shadow, killing hordes of kobolds with flaming oil potions and occasional backstabs. When he was near the final corridor that leads to Lendarn and ogre magi, he was momentarily blocked by something invisible. I was surprised and wondered if Lendarn was spying there invisibly, and started detecting illusions. Accidentaly tapped on a corner (playing on Ipad) and the dialogue box said Wizard Eye-has nothing to say to you. There was an invisible enemy wizard eye there!! And sure enough, Lendarn came rushing a few seconds later and my guy had to hit the shadows quickly. (Ofcourse Lendarn then managed to ko my protagonist with a zig-zag lightning bolt, but that's not the point :p)

I've never seen this behaviour, never even suspected enemy mages using Wizard eye before, this is SCS doing, right? If it is, I am impressed sir, that's some real artificial intelligence there! Wow. I wonder how many mages use this strategyand I was none the wiser.

Question concerning the Flail of Age +5

$

So it is right that upgrading the flail from +4 to +5 give to it the free action status.

I guess this can be a problem if you want to haste your character.

But concerning the boots of speed or items that can be applied after you hold the flail in your hand : do they prevent the character to be hasted or gain the advantage of more APR ?

If so, I guess I'll have to rely on Mace of the stars +5 or Hammer of Runes +5 (or perhaps even Flail of the Ages +4).

Thanks for your answers.

What is your favourite enhancement in Baldur's Gate EE

As the thread title states, if you had to choose one enhancement in the BG EE game which one would it be?

Oddly enough I rather liked Sam Hulick's music "Rebirth of a Legend" as it captured my excitement for the rest of the gaming experience!

Rabbit's Run... Spoilers!

Ok, so here's what I have so far
Rabbit's Run
a Highly Improbable Tale
Being the story of a BG1 Dragon Disciple
sworn to poverty

Rabbit, Human Dragon Disciple. Stats: 18/18/18/18/8/15, Lawful Neutral. Solo/Core/Poverty. Spells: Missile, Sleep. My weapon, a plain Quarterstaff, a sling w/unenchanted bullets. My one proficiency point went to Staff, won't get much use out of the sling for a while. No Scrolls, no Potions.....no rings, no things. sigh, here we go.
Prologue
Level 1
They call me Rabbit, and they laugh when they say it. I know my time here at Candlekeep is nigh over. So, I don't know the world beyond these walls, except in books. So many books, and I have read them all. Something is stirring in me, as well, I can't quite place it. My vow is of poverty. To eschew all wealth and objects of value or use, and to move through the world on my own wits..... I have a secret, shhsssh!, I don't know what scares me more, whether or not I will survive the world, or whether the world will survive ME!
I did every little thing that everybody wanted me to do,and, they paid me in very small fashion, not that I care. There were, shockingly, two different men who tried to kill me. I killed them, the first kills of my life. I laughed insane laughter when I did it.... strange, exceedingly strange.
Chapter 1
After a quick good-bye to Imoen, I approached Gorion, and, my life was never the same again. We left, and were attacked by a group of thugs led by a VERY scary armored figure. I did like Gorion told me and ran like the Demons were after me. Maybe, they were. At the dawning, I woke to the voice of Imoen calling. I told her to go back to the 'Keep, and headed south to the High Hedge. Walking two bits, ( a bit is the distance you can see in one direction) to the east and then straight south to the Castle, then NE along the trail, soon I was in Beregost.
I talked down a drunk at Feldpost's, spent a single gold piece to buy a book for my friend Firebead across the street. Slept in the stables. I dreamed of Flying over the Ocean, with my brothers, the Dragons.
Chapter 2
Went south to the next two areas, by sticking to the east as far as I could, was able to make Nashkell, where I talked to Noober a bunch of times until he ran out of things to say...., then exited south again.
Got part of the quest to find Albert's doggie, but got run off the area by Skellys. Back in Naskell, I tried to sleep on
the street, didn't make it through the night, but did pick up the ability to cure light wounds. Finally was able to get the dog back to Albert...which got me Level 2. I am getting chased, and ambushed, run, Rabbit, run!
Level 2
Got out to the Area far west of Nash, and brought back Brage, the Guard Captain... donated the 1000 gold back to the Temple. Back to B'Gost, then right back down south, I killed two Ogrillon, one at a time, luring them back to B'Gost, a two day process. Bringing the letter back to Mirriane in town, good for some more XP. I entered Landrin's house, after resting, and hit the four Spiders with a Sleep , dropping two for a little nappy, and beat feet out the door, dragging two out with me. After getting a little distance, I hit the two who followed with a sleep, then beat them to dead with staff, hitting level three.

Famous last words

A posting in the Meme thread made me remember some of the fabulous last words I heard playing RPG all these years.

So do you have any famous last words you heard or said? Tell us your story. :)

And if anyone has a lot of time and want to laugh a little, take a look at the Canonical list of Famous Last Words in this page:

http://www.wfrp.de/hosted/flw/en/

So just to sart here is one I remember from my group:

"This will be an easy fight." Said by the group's fighter when our 8th level group met a dozen kobolds in a dungeon... just before we triggered an acid trap that reduced most of the group to 2 or 3 hitpoints... the kobolds had flaming arrows ;)

Here's how to add custom sound sets

$

Don't know if this has been addressed yet, but if so I'll post now and apologize later.

So after about a day of tinkering about with my game I finally figured out how to add custom sound sets.
After you've put your correctly named sound set in the sounds folder (Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition\Data\00766\lang\en_US\sounds (replace en_US with your language if not using English)) you need to edit a file called CHARSND.2da.

I would recommend using DLTCEP (just google it) to do this. In the editor press the 'Edit'-menu and select 'Tables'.
From that screen press 'Load Table' and look for CHARSND.

After you open it place the marker at the last column and then press the 'Add column'-button. Name the column the same as your soundset and under it you add the string references you want the sound to have.

Unless you want to actually add new ones for your soundset I would recommend changing them all to 30 which is completely blank. You must do this because keeping it to the default -1 will result in your sounds not being played.
And there you go!

If anything was unclear, just ask.

Example of the 2da-table after I added my custom sound set F_MONK1:

Lack of evil clerics in BG

$

So I have recently got BG:EE on steam and I had a good alignment playthrough recently with a Fighter/Cleric character. I was trying to use characters which where not part of my usual canon party adventure. So I used Coran, Alora, Dorn, Xan and Neera. It was a great team in the end and I had a blast trying out the new characters.

My next playthrough I decided to do something I have never done in an infinity engine game, and that was to try out an evil team. I have a problem though, and that is if you don't like Viconia, you are a bit stuck for divine casters. I am using Branwen but I feel she doesn't really fit in with the tone of the party (Montaron, Xzar, Safana, Eldoth, and Blackguard PC). I might replace her with Tiax when I reach baldurs gate, or Quayle, but they are both multiclass and really I have enough rogues and spell casters in my team already.

Essentially I feel that an evil single/mult classed cleric or fighter cleric, would be a great addition to Baldurs gate. Does anyone know of a mod that adds a new character compatible ? Or should I just suck it up and use Viconia.

What's your most disappointing enhancement in bg:ee

It is essentially a Fighter class, so why not just make it as a kit under Fighter and remove the ability to Dual class and list it as a penalty?

Question about totemic druids

$

I was delighted to discover through reading posts that the totemic druid has been scaled and tweaked, and that you can now choose which totem animal to summon.

My question is, do the animals get magic attacks at level 10, or are they still useless against creatures which require magic weapons to hit?

Also, are there any known plans to make spirit animals beyond level 10 for BG2:EE?

Thanks.

The no reload challenge (spoiler warning)

$

One of the most fun thing to do in BG is to play with no reload.

The point of the thread is for you to describe your attempts (failed or successful)

I'll start with mine (i just list the significative attempts, not the ones in which i died after 5 minutes). All these playthrough were on core rules difficulty (save for leveling, to get max hp)

- Fighter/mage/thief. Solo. Died in baldur's gate (level 5/5/6) from the mages upstairs of the magical shop (forgot their were casting horror...)
- Berserker. Solo. Died at level 6 from an ankheg, ambushing me while resting
- Inquisitor. In group of 4 (imoen, minsc, viconia). Still in progress (in cloakwoods)
- Berserker / mage (dual 7/8). Solo. Sill in progress (in catacombs at candlekeep). I should succeed it with this one (unless i do something dumb), as he is now 7/8 and almost unkillable (berserker kit is awesome)

My next try will be a solo sorcerer.

Some advices for those who want to try it :
- i find solo play easier than group play (as defense is paramount in no reload, and much easier to get on one character than on 6)
- very good knowledge of the game is necessary.
- when playing solo, never roll to save against a deadly effect (paralysis, horror, charm....) -> you need to get immunities (potions, items, abilities, spells) or you will die.
- always have an invisibility potion ready, as a panic button
