Dissapointed

I sent this to Overhaul last week, after playing around with BG:EE for a while. I haven't received an answer yet. I post it here because I want to know if everyone else's experience has been similar.

To Overhaul games costumer support.

I have been a fan of Baldur's Gate for many years now. When I read about Overhaul and your plans for the game, I was overjoyed. Modern RPGs are nowhere near the quality, depth or challenge of the BG series. Many gamers make excuses for these 3D, dumbed down games, how they are appealing for a wider audience, more casual, with better graphics, etc. Some even argue that some of them, like KOTOR and ME1 are on the same league as the BG games. But just by comparing the amount of dialog on each of them, it's plain to see that they are not the same thing. So I applaud your effort to bring BG and, more broadly, the kind of RPG that they are, back from the dead.

I bought the game for PC the minute you announced that the iPad and Mac versions where delayed, I would have rather had any of those, but I wanted to play right away (By the way, you handled said delay poorly by announcing it the day before realease).

I wasn't bothered when you postponed the release the first time, to clean up bugs and make sure the quality was up to snuff. I didn't wan't to play a buggy version of the game I knew and loved. The thing is, even now, BG:EE is full of bugs.

For starters, it's full of random annoyances. Sometimes the game slows down to a crawl, and must be restarted. I have had several random lock ups, that required killing it from the task manager. The THACO is calculated differently on the character sheet than on the inventory.

As for the original content, I have picked up two of your new characters, Neera and Dorn. On the first Neera specific quest, the one where you go find Adoy, his dialog seemed to drop some lines, because it didn't make sense to me. He also gave me a magical belt that, after being identified, had no description, it was just a regular one. I reloaded, did everything again, and this time the belt did have a description. But this time around, I missed some dialog by Neera, that did take place on the first try. I'm guessing that's another bug.

On Dorn's quest, upon meeting with Kryll, some dialog popped up between Dorn and I, but it was about Kryll, it didn't include her. It was probably supposed to happen before finding her. After that, the camera locked on Dorn, and my attempts to initiate dialog with Kryll where unsucessful. In fact, upon attacking her, she didn't even respond, and just stood there. Dorn never said another word about the quest, and it still shows up on my journal as it is not completed.

This weekend I tried to play the Black Pits on multiplayer with a friend. We created the characters, started the story, bought some armor, saved and quit. When we tried to pick it up again, the saves weren't there, not the specific save, nor the quicksave or autosave. We tried again, with a random party (we had lost the characters we created on the first run), and the saves weren't registering. We gave up.

It's mind boggling that every bit of new content I tried hasn't worked. I can't understand how you realeased this as it is. Perhaps you needed the income to keep the books out of the red, or maybe your partners forced the release date on you, but still, you where wrong to publish it on this state. Maybe you should have concentrated on making the core game work, and then release the extra content as free DLCs, I don't know, but unless mine is an isolated case, this is going to hurt your company. In particular for those new to the series, who will only know this version of BG, you might be turning them off to the whole thing. They'll lose out on BG and you'll lose out on customers. It's a shame, because the games can be great.

Having to reload, travel to one area and comeback, restarting, etc, just to try to get around the bugs makes for an awful experience. BG is about immersing yourself on the story, the characters and the setting. You can't do that when you are constantly engaged on a frustrating battle with the software.

I deleted my saves and I won't be playing the game anymore, I have good memories of BG, and playing like this will sour them. Perhaps I will pick it up again when you have worked out the bugs, but not as it is now. I feel cheated, like I payed for beta software.

I hope you'll rectify this situation, and I still wish you luck, because I really want the kind of RPG development you are doing to succeed.

Sincerly.

Graphics card question - please help a neophyte

I'm a computer novice. Well, less than a novice. I have an HP 600-1120 All-In-One CPU. Can I upgrade my graphics card to something that will allow me to play BG:EE? Here's a link to the specs: http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/hp-touchsmart-600-1120/4507-3118_7-34101552.html

Expansion / Connectivity

Slots 1.0 (total) / 0.0 (free) x Processor - SO DIMM 204-pin,
2.0 (total) / 0.0 (free) x Memory,
2.0 (total) / 1.0 (free) x MXM,
1.0 PCI Express Mini Card
Interfaces 1.0 x Network - Infrared ( 2 front, 3 rear ),
1.0 x Audio - Output,
1.0 x Audio - SPDIF output,
5.0 x Hi-Speed USB - Line-in,
1.0 x Headphones - Ethernet 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T,
1.0 x Audio - Line-out,
1.0 x Remote control

If I can't upgrade my graphics card to play, can anyone recommend a cheap laptop that will play this? Here's my original post in the Intel thread:

Well, unfortunately you can now add me to the list of people that can't play. I thought I had it fixed by changing it to Windows 95 compatibility with everything disabled. At least I could walk around without lag, although there was lag whenever things were moving (water, people, etc).

Sadly, after my first combat encounter with a few hobgoblins and casting entangle the game became unplayable. Almost to the point of freezing. I'm open to suggestions if anyone has figured out how to make this work. Here are my specs:

HP 600-1120 All-in-one CPU
Intel Core processor
4GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium
Intel HD Graphics driver 8.15.10.2226 (updated and said I have the latest)

I really want to play this, thought I was, now I'm not and I'm terribly frustrated.

Beefiest damage oriented character possible in BGEE going into BG2EE

Basically, I'm an old lazy nerd too tired to do any serious research on the topic and am thus asking for tips!

I played my usual pure fighter through BGEE already but I'm interested in making a real beast of a character for BG2EE. I have literally zero experience with dual/multiclassing and have no idea what to make.

I'd love it if I could get some tips on what to dual class and when! I prefer fighty characters but I'm thankful for any help provided.

If there's already a thread on this, I apologise for this one.

I just finished BGEE with a solo Fighter/Mage/Thief on Insane difficulty and although I really love this game I was dissapointed by the lack of challenge, even with a lone character (so with 6...). The only fight I found somewhat difficult was the last one against Sarevok (I got him by running around from him for about 10 mn, killing him slowly with magic arrows). I did not use any cheat nor XP cap remover (so my levels were 6/6/7 at the end). Is there a way that Overhaul could possibly add a level of difficulty in a later patch? Thanks!

BG2 Druid Grove

So I know this isn't BGEE related but I figured this would be the most populated forum of people that could help.

*Slight Spoilers*

So I am at the Druid Grove in BG2, and the game seems to be refusing to acknowledge that Jaheira is with my party. I have challenged Faldorn with her many times, but she is just giving me the "Only a druid can challenge me..." speech. Is this a bug and is there any way to fix it?

Killing People

Hello everybody!
I finally got my BG EE to work and i got a question: i just played for like 30 mins or so but i wonder if i actually get in trouble if i kill people in a town. I am nof running arround killing shit but some people attack you in the storyline. Should i just kill them or switch to fist fight and only knock them down?

Cool (and weird) ex-priest build.

I had this strange idea when testing magically created weapons. Priests of Helm has Seeking Sword, a +4 weapon, but it requires a long sword proficiency (bug?) so clerics get -3 to hit with it, and have only +1 bonus in the end. Seemed a waste.

Started a human Priest of Helm, leveled a bit. Attacks with Seeking Sword has only +1 to hit due to prof. penalty, like I said.

Now, after lvl 4 or so, dual-class into thief. Wow, surprise! You can put proficiency in long/shortswords now! It feels weird though, to stop being a priest of guardians and vigilance and become a thief. Quite a change. Maybe to better learn the tricks of the vile rogues? Or one too many blows to the head? It makes sense if the alignment is CN..Heck, everything makes sense to them.

An interesting note, during the transision period, when his cleric levels are inactive, this character is pretty gimped. He can not use cleric weapons mace/flail/hammers since his active class is thief. He can not use bladed weapons like daggers and swords since he has cleric levels, however inactive. He can only equip a club or staff. And a sling. Worse than a mage! Very weak.

But once his cleric levels are back, he is awesome. He can now equip heavy cleric weapons, but bladed weapons are forever banned to him. It is inconsequental.

Remember he did have the longsword and shortsword proficiency at thief level up 1. So he can use Seeking Sword AND Flaming Blade (and also Shilelagh and Spiritual Hammer too, if he has hammer proficiency, which he can have at cleric lvl 1) without penalty. Flame blade requires short sword prof. so clerics are always at -3 to hit with it. NOT our character!

Did you know you could backstab with Shilelagh and Spiritual Hammer too? Our character can employ them all too! And his Seeking Sword. Backstab with a +4 weapon which sets your attacks to 3/round.

In fact this is the only character who can use Seeking Sword and Flaming Blades with no penalty AND backstab with them to boot! He even gets single weapon proficiency, it works with his magical weapons. He has a bit better AC and increased crit. chance and more style and flair with it. Way cool! He is one bad-a$$ ex-priest. :D

Certainly the most interesting build I've heard in a while. A mockery of Helm Priesthood? Or interesting character build? Your call.

EDIT: And a bug alert. Oh...my..gods! This build is even more powerful thanks to a wonderful bug. Seeking sword never expires! Tried resting, CTRL+T to pass time, wait forever..it stays forever with you. It disables spell casting, which is bad, but our rogue/ex-priest can now have a permanent +4 weapon he is proficient with, and backstab with it at his leisure. Dispel magic or CTRL+R will get rid of it, I think, but you can create another one after resting. Heh. Those wonderful, wonderful bugs. To think, have it active when dual-classing and he has his beloved Seeking sword all the time. Yay!

EDIT2:Seeking sword expires sometimes. Sometimes does not. Weird. Still he can cast it again. ^^ Oh. I got it. Resting or CTRL+T does not affect Seeking Sword's timer. It has its own, weird and wrong timer somehow. (duration is longer than 1 round/level as it says in kit desc.) Buggy anyway.

( Spoilers) Flaming Fist HQ near the Endgame

When you try to save Duke Eltan from the Flaming Fist HQ, killing the guards in there makes you lose 10 reputation.

I mean, the talking guard Benjy makes it clear that they want Duke Eltan dead, so why do you get the rep loss?

I could only do it by hasting my party and simply walking past them, then ignoring the guards that run up the stairs while you kill the Greater Doppleganger, then walk out again ignoring everyone. And Bhaal help you if your cleric gets Hold Person'ed.

Seems like there should be a better way, either by fighting past the guards or sneaking in somehow. Maybe I should have looked harder for Invisibility 10' radius....

Gnome or Half-Elf Cleric/Mage

I'm torn between having a Cleric/Mage Half-Elf or a Gnome Cleric/Illusionist. The half-elf is almost inferior in almost every aspect. Gnomes have far better saving throws, plus the additional spell slot which I consider to be critical. However I really dislike the gnome paper doll, the avatar and I much prefer the elven one.
My question is, would you consider it cheating or overpowered if I changed a half-elf to a cleric/specialist mage using shadowkeeper?

bg2 low level challenge (completed)

$

After 20+ bg2 playthrough with many different mods, I can say I know the ins and outs of almost all of the game contents. I'm not as interest in the other rp challenges where if my main character dies (sometime I make a stupid mistake), I have to restart over in the beginning of the game. I think another tactical challenge is to force myself to play at a low level in the entire game. Is it possible to defeat irenicus, kangaxx or demogorgon w/ a lvl 7 party? I think this game is fun because you are forced to try new strategies due to having little to no access to higher level spells (limited number of scrolls for mage, no higher level spells for priest) and the party is very fragile throughout the game. Resource planning becomes even more important and certain npcs are more well equipped in some situations.

To play this challenge, the only rule is that you can never click on the level up button. You may max your levels in bg1, import to bg2 and abide to this challenge. I wouldnt start this challenge in bg1 because you simply dont have enough hp to survive (you will die from irenicus's animated torture before you start bg2!)

I think the easiest class is the barbarian, since you roll d12 per level and the barbarian rage gives so many immunities. For party, I think keldorn is a must for his dispel magic and true seeing. Viconia for highest level cleric, Jan/Imoen for thief skills, Edwin for mage spells and the last slot goes to either Korgan, Minsc, Mazzy or Valygar depending on the situation.

The Bhaalspawn Ascension

Okay, I always wondered, and I wanted to see what peoples opinions were on it...

At the end of ToB as everyone and their grandmother knows, CHARNAME ascends (possibly) and becomes a God (maybe).
Now presumably if he/she is Evil aligned he/she will contest for the Throne of Murder with Cyric possibly dethroning Cyric and becoming the new Lord of Murder. Or perhaps he/she would contest for or be given a part of the overall portfolio of Death.

Seems fairly self explanatory to me.

But what about a good aligned CHARNAME?

What portfolio would a good aligned ascended CHARNAME possibly recieve given that he/she is a scion of murder?

Help with portraits?

Hello all,

I'm a bit into the game, and didn't realize during character creation I'd inadvertently selected one of the new NPC's portraits for my main character. I would like to have the new NPC in my party, but want to avoid having two identical portraits. I searched the forums for about a half-an-hour, and didn't find a working answer: is there any way to change your portrait, or an NPC's, once the game has begun? Couldn't find a working method to override NPC portraits . . . . Any help greatly appreciated!
