Charges "per day" items...how do they work?

$

Is it actually once per day as it says? Recharges once every 24 in-game hours, or at midnight? Does it recharge regardless of whether the party rests or not, if enough time passes? That's the way it works in tabletop I believe, and in many ways these games did their best to adhere to tabletop rules.

Or is it identical to spellcaster spells, as if the item has spells "memorized," and needs an 8 hour rest to regain them? Which doesn't really make sense calling it "per day" if you can recharge it three times per day...

Do all such items behave the same way? I know there are a lot in Siege of Dragonspear, but there were some in the older games too, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were some behavioral differences between games.

Just wondered if anyone knew for sure.

Fighters not receiving APR bonus at level 7

Help! My warriors reached level 7 and I've just noticed none of them are receiving their intended 1/2 APR bonus.

I have a lengthy WeiDU log, so I did a little digging around. On a hunch concerning the only mod I installed that should alter APR, namely CDTweaks' "Everyone Gets Bonus APR from Specialization: Internal working version, unsupported", I found this unanswered bug report: https://www.gibberlings3.net/forums/topic/30504-everyone-gets-apr-bonus-from-specialization-bug/

It suggests that component could be the problem. However uninstalling it right now is not really possible, since there are some fairly substantial mods after it in my installation including SCS, EETactics and Item Randomiser, and my limited play-time doesn't currently allow me the several contiguous hours needed to effect their reinstallation.

So the only option immediately available I can think of is directly editing the game's files (after a suitable back-up, of course!).

Does any kind soul know where I should begin digging, presumably using Near Infinity or some such tool?

WeiDU log attached, in case I missed something.

Hello folks,

This is a very speciffic question:
I want to play a swashbuckler with throwing dagger for most part of the game.
I'm wandering if i have to play with rogurebalancing.

With rogue rebalancing, swash gets fighter Taco with melee weapons.
But what are throwing daggers? Always melee even when they are throw?
I can't figure it out in game if i lose figther"s tac0 bonus when i use in a ranged way !

Thanks guys

Anyone still like vanilla Ranger?

I was thinking of playing as a vanilla ranger for my next full playthrough (beginning with BG1:EE) - admittedly, largely because I wanted an excuse to use this excellent portrait that Syntia13 created: image But aside from RP purposes, it seems to me that a vanilla ranger is still a very efficient class. After all, look at Kivan, who is generally considered one of, if not the best offensive machines in BG1 - and he doesn't even fully capitalize on the ranger's full potential, since he mainly specializes in halberds, which forgoes the ranger's dual-wield potential. Personally I love the fact that a ranger can be a fairly effective dual-wielder right off the bat, and those two prof points can be better spent elsewhere. In other discussions, I've seen it said that the vanilla ranger class has been eclipsed by its kit classes. I don't agree. The ranger kits all have armor and/or weapon restrictions that prevent them from being effective tanks. What strikes me most about the vanilla ranger is that they can be both a skilled ranged fighter or a heavily armored, dual wielding tank with equal effectiveness. What are other people's thoughts about vanilla rangers? Are there any other drawbacks that I'm overlooking here?

Baldur's Gate Who Am I?

Bit of fun. 3 clues. First person to get it right sets the next one. 1) I am based in Athkatla. 2) My master is a mage and his companions are short, smelly and cowardly. 3) If you kill me my papa will cry. But if you kill him, I don't care! Who am I?

Curious if anyone knows a YouTube play-through that meets the following...
Needs:
Completed (Can’t stress this enough.)
Not solo (I want the party banter, doesn’t matter who/good/evil)

Wants:
Roleplaying/reading dialogue
Unmodded (I’m not set in stone on this one if the above are met.)

Don’t care if it has Siege of Dragonspear or not. Actually kind of prefer it didn’t actually but so long as it’s complete and not a solo/speed run I’m happy. Been watching a lot of Total War channels on YT lately but feel like something with a different pace. Looking to get myself into the mood for a long BG1/2/ToB run. Having trouble deciding what I want to play and with what party members. Figure this could help, might learn some new tricks along the way too.

Did you *actually* know?

I started posting random trivia about Baldur's Gate and Co. on the activity page, but it have become so many that I decided to start a new topic. If you yourself know an interesting piece of trivia, feel free to share. Either way, here we go: Did you know? Alora isn't a halfling, she actually is a really short and petite gnome. Bhaal and Cyric used to be lovers but Bhaal cheated on him with his sister which is why Cyric killed him. Dynaheir sings "These boots are made for walking" by Nancy Sinatra because Dynaheir used to be Nancy Sinatra's old D'n'D player character. CHARNAME isn't actually a Bhaalspawn, they were accidentally switched as a newborn with the temple's janitor's child. Alaundo's prophecy is just a fraud. There is a squirrel with a powerful magic ring somewhere in the original Baldur's Gate. Icewind Dale was named after Dale Ace Windy, a famous Canadian popstar from the 80s. If you shoot a Magic Missile at Gorion in the very beginning of the original Baldur's Gate in Candlekeep, he will give you some very useful potions in return. Adventure Y was originally supposed to be called Adventure Z but the devs reconsidered to avoid a potential legal suite from Bandai because of the similarity to Dragonball Z. Kivan never had a wife, he just made the story up as part of his wrestling persona. Sarevok was voiced by Jaleel White, who is most famous for his role as Steve Urkel in the 90s sitcom "Family Matters". Nothing can stop the Smooze. Edwin is actually a virgin, he is just overcompensating all the time. When your familiar dies you may lose one constitution point, but if you keep it's corpse, Cromwell will forge a Katana +4, +2 bleeding damage/ round for 10 rounds from it. There are actually no spambots on these forums, the mods just ban random people because the motherbrain tells them to do so. If you wish to save Clara you need to choose the following dialogue options after meeting her: 2, 4, 1, 1, 3 There is a glitch that let's you one-hit Beholders, if you cast barkskin *and* stoneskin on yourself and then attack them with a Quarterstaff +1. Gorion and Jaheira used to be a couple back in the day.

The General Questions Thread

So I got to thinking, while I often have general questions about various aspects of the game, it's rather bothersome to clutter up the activity page with random questions, especially when I have as many as I do. So I came up with this idea. This is a general questions thread that anyone can contribute to, both with questions and answers. Ask a question, hopefully it'll be answered. (and with the efficiency of the community here, I wouldn't be surprised if it's answered rapidly.) I doubt things will become too cluttered, so it'll be a nice way for us to help each other out. Now, I don't THINK this has been done before, but if so, then do what needs to be done, dear mods, as you generally know best. Without further explanation, here's the first question I have. If I were to complete Anomen's quest line, would he retain the stat boost if I teleport him to me in ToB? The character I'm working with would be unlikely to take him through all of SoA, but due to Aerie's... "problems" in ToB, my main character would want to leave her where she's safe, but that leaves a clerical gap in the party. Obviously Anomen would fill that hole nicely, but I don't know if he'll keep all of his bonuses from me completing his quest. In theory, I will be taking only five characters through the end of SoA, so if I have to bring Anomen along it's not a deal breaker, but for RP reasons it makes more sense to simply bring him to me when I need him.

Things Beamdog gets right.

As a holiday present to Beamdog, and as a gesture of repentance (I've been a bit of a thorn lately), I'd like to start this thread about what Beamdog gets right.

Constructive or negative criticism is off topic and not for this thread. Criticism of other's posts is off topic and not for this thread. It is purely for genuine appreciation of the work Beamdog has done. It isn't meant to be sycophantic, just a place free of nitpicking. So please no posts about this being like that. That's not what this is about at all. It's a gesture from somebody (me) who has been mostly negative as of late, and I need to have some positivity.

So I'll start. Planescape: Torment is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. I'm grateful Beamdog made an enhanced edition for PC because the old version was a bit dated. They didn't change a thing content-wise, just made it a better game for modern PCs, not just compatible. I had this sitting on GoG and just never got around to it. Then the EE came out, and I enjoyed this masterpiece like it was 1999 but with 1080p monitors.

Neverwinter Nights is just not a game I could ever get into--until now. Because Beamdog resurrected the game, Ossian Studios updated Darkness over Daggerford, and I got an old school D&D cRPG with plenty of voice acting, a feature I really appreciated this year with my vision issues. I'm looking forward to playing Tyrants of the Moonsea this next year since it too has lots of voice acting.

Thanks Beamdog for all you do!

Post your Nightmare Mode experiences here, from challenges to fun moments. Here's me killing Niz, the Black Dragon in Suldanessellar. http://youtu.be/4YZmNWpTkxU Party -------- FMT Berserker 7/Cleric Kensai 9/Mage Inquisitor Assassin 9/Fighter Sorcerer Apparantly Nightmare mode gives monsters 3 * Normal HP +80, so he should have 680 HP. I managed to deal 686, so that's pretty accurate. The reason I used such cautious tactics was to ensure easy tallying of damage.

The Baldur's Gate Wolfwere Circus

During the events at the Isle of Balduran, the party gets infected with lycanthropy. You have 25 days to cure it, or else everyone in the party but the hero will be transformed into a greater wolfwere, probably bringing your adventure to an end.

Probably.

The details of this infection have snagged a number of players over the years, there are reports across the internet of problems people have had with it...primarily the fact that you're given 25 days, but the ship ride back to Ulgoth's Beard takes 22 days, so if you slept 9 times before leaving the island, everybody transforms instantly as you land on the docks. I wanted to see this myself so I did it on purpose, and yeah. It's kind of terrible but also a fun detail...most modern games would never do anything like this and just handwave it away. You can't put the player in a "walking dead" scenario, right?

But anyway. I was curious what would happen if I just ran from the wolfweres and tried to escape. So I did, and I succeeded. I ran all the way back to the Friendly Arm Inn by myself as fast as my legs would take me. Sorry Minsc, Dynaheir, Branwen, Coran and Imoen...I guess you're out there tearing up Ulgoth's Beard but that's none of my business.

Their portraits in the party list were still grey, though. That meant they should be revivable, right? But wait, they're not dead, they're werewolves...?

It turns out the way the game turns your party into werewolves (or wolfweres) is that it kills them, and then spawns a greater wolfwere in the spot they were standing. And that 25 day lycanthropy timer is still expired.

So naturally when I paid a visit to Gellana Mirrorshade and paid to revive all my dead friends...they immediately died again, and spawned another wolfwere in their place. Even though they're all still back at Ulgoth's Beard terrorizing the docks.

And you can do this again and again, keep reviving them and spawning more...

jf6gwSK.jpg

(I set up a teleport field in the hopes that they wouldn't crowd me before I could revive them again. Didn't work the best.)

But then I had another thought.

See, I had collected every party member in the game and deposited them in the Friendly Arm Inn.

b7ef765.jpg

What happens if I recruit more party members?

It turns out...well, they're party members. And the script says that if the 25 days are up, all party members turn into werewolves, no exceptions.

XutBtKU.jpg

Even though none of them were ever at the Isle of Balduran and never got infected to begin with.

They give you that nice "joining up" speech again, "oh I've missed you, do you want to go on more adventures together?" "Sure, let's go!" *immediately explodes into gore*

D2HBsGz.jpg

It's really hard to talk to everyone, or even most of them, before you get completely surrounded by wolfweres and killed. Again I set up a teleport field to keep them moving around, and at least once I cast invisibility on myself to get some breathing room. It's still nuts.

nQYwIWL.jpg

So ends my goofy foray into wolfwere nonsense.

Romance and Imprison

Ran across an interesting question on Reddit’s BG sub. No answers there yet beyond some guesswork. Curious if anyone has a solid answer here.

If you are romancing someone and they get imprisoned, lets say Kangaxx sends them for a time out, are you able to romance someone else?

***

My (extremely limited and likely incorrect) understanding is that at some point in all romance options you will get to a conversation that flags you as “Romancing *whoever*”. Once this is flagged, you cease getting the options to pursue a romance with other NPCs.

My guess then, is that Imprisonment does not “unflag” that, so you would not be able to romance a new partner.

What's one of the worst thing's you've done to an NPC? You know, leave Imoen in Spellhold (don't deny it, you wanted to leave her at least once), ask Maple Willow Aspen about her parents' tree fixation, that sort of thing.

Your Most Epic Moments

Recently I've been inspired by a board I saw called "Your Greatest Facepalm Moments" so I decided to start 2018 off with a bang by creating the opposite of that. What are some of your most epic moments? Thoroughly crushing your enemies? Fighting for ages and barely escaping with your life? Performing the most amazing and hard fought near victory you ever had in your life that would rival an anime battle? Pulling off an incredible feat that you swear you couldn't do again if you tried? Taking very little damage from something that is supposed to annihilate you? A combination of these? Post your most amazing and epic moments ever right here in my very first board of 2018.

No metagame, no reload run questions

$

Hi, I was wondering how to go about a no reload, no metagame 100% run. I'm in a BG originals phase, so no EE content.

I consider it ok to use the BG wiki for many but not all monsters because the PC grew up in Candlekeep and should have read up on all kinds of monsters (e.g. basilisks). At least about their general abilities. This means that a human would not be considered to be hostile beforehand if it is neutral in-game and no wiki check. Also, a plenty of missed rewards.

Does it seem possible to go through all the content of the BG games this way? For example Shoal seems like a live or die by luck thing. If she somehow gets to an NPC first instead of the PC, but that depends on the PC class. Also, the nasty trap in Spellhold, any self-respecting thief would try do disarm it and get thinner for it. Are there other examples of things like these?

I'd like to have the PC play an active/frontline role in the party (a party of six) but it looks much more likely such a role to lead to a game over. Any realistic way to go for it, say, with a FMT? The Spellhold trap would end that, if he is the trap disarmer. On the other hand, scouting seems compulsory, although not necessarily by the PC.

What would be the best class? I imagine the PC lugging around all kinds of equipment for different scenarios. E.g. having a sword to protect from domination... but if I roleplay it properly I can't really swap weapons mid-round just to get the benificial protection effect as a spell is cast.

Also, I imagine resting after nearly every fight would be more or less compulsory.

Could a berserker or berserker->mage do it? Do I need to use rage every second of every fight? How about any other front-liner? (Think of meeting beholders for the first time without B shield, or mind flayers, or maze). Could FMT do it? Or is the only option a mage/archer/etc staying safely behind and resurrecting inevitable deaths?

I'm thinking more or less vanilla run, no scs, etc, no optimal item collection order, but 100% content playthrough and full party.
