Little things that annoy you

I has been bugging me for some time: why does the Amaunator avatar give you a shield that belongs to Bane worshippers? It is even called the Saving Grace! image Are there other little inconsistencies in the game bug you? PS: Hurray my first evil party in BG2, Dorn's wedding crashing ability really lowered my reputation. There seems to be very few banters though.

This is the fourth in a series of polls to measure the demographics of the Beamdog community (I was just curious). The poll is anonymous by default, but you're welcome to discuss the issue publicly if you like. I'll be creating a separate poll for political affiliation later on.

Storm Shield Issues - Advice Needed

I am immensely enjoying the Priest of Talos kit. Storm Shield is a game changing ability and when it works, it is devastating being able to lob Fireball after Fireball into combat without having to worry about your Priest of Talos. However, I am finding magic users frequently seem to dispel the Storm Shield. Is there anything I can do to keep Storm Shield up or prevent it from being dispelled?

Upscaling Infinity Engine Maps with AI

Upscaling NN algorithms have recently became popular and there are some very successful examples with Morrowind and DOOM. Me and some others the gameupscale subreddit have been experimenting with some different games and I decided to have a go at upscaling some Infinity Engine maps. Original (Upscaled x4): Upscaled by AI: More with BG2. and more less successful attempts with IWD. Some of them didn't work out as well as I hoped but it's all about experimentation. I also used Waifu2x when I think I would get better results using ESRGAN, but I don't have the GPU to use ESRGAN with the size of these images. Waifu2x was trained on anime imagery which obviously doesn't translate well to the type of maps in Infinity Engine games. Infinity Engine games mostly still look good today but I think they could still gain a slight benefit from upscaling, especially if you play with enhanced editions and use the zoom feature. We've been experimenting with other games at r/gameupscale as I think these upscaling algorithms have the potential to improve a lot of older games :) I couldn't get them working properly in game though, but I've never worked with modding Infinity Engine games before. I think I'm incorrectly converting them back to TIF as the seams become very apparent.

Baldurs Gate Meme Thread II: Enhanced Edition (Careful, everyone, SPOILERS!)

Going to star this'n out with a few favey-rights from the last thread... image image image image image = = = = = = = = = Kitties aside, it's time for rules. Let me see, here... Keep It Clean-ish: Let's keep this thread PG-13. -I'm not saying "Let's make jokes that are appropriate for Leave It To Beaver!", just avoid the profanity and sexual content. Don't Spoil The Fun!: As far as spoilers go, well, it'd be mighty fine if you could put spoiler tags ( [ spoiler ] [ /spoiler ] , without the spaces) around such things, so people new to this game in need of a quick giggle don't get spoiled like I did on Wikipedia in 2006. :( Now I regard spoilers twice as much. Play Nice: Like Alora says, "Careful, everyone, play nice!". This is a "space" for us to have fun. Let's play nice, and not bait or antagonize (troll) others. Something Is Wrong, Here...: SCARY_WIZARD thinks you should contact some moderators if a rule appears to have been broken. Wild Surge Issue 13 - Loot

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1go1MemvzUHd7bHn6tMCbdeCF731Oh4rF Whether a buried chest, untouched haunted ruins, or a sleeping dragon's hoard, treasure is often a way to adventure. And why not? More gold gets you better weapons and armour and wondrous, magical items. Even those who spurn mere gold will say nothing against looting a powerful shield from a dead man's arm. And what about antagonists? Why do brigands rob the country folk – and why was your party hired to defeat them? Why has a lord been found dead in his home with an expensive family heirloom gone – and where will you start looking to find the assassin? Treasure is one of many reasons for the party to leave the tavern. It's also shiny. :3 In this issue, we interview Luke Rideout about the upcoming Dice, Camera, Action! DLC pack, take a look at what makes loot in the BG games work so well, and talk about the role of loot in literature. We also examine the NWN persistent worlds Salvation and Age of Magic about loot on their servers, and we present a comprehensive BG:EE loot price sheet! Considering playing Red Dead Redemption 2? Read our review of the game and album. Additionally, we review the classic book Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, and follow that up appropriately with a review of Down in the Dark, a pirate-themed power metal album by Blazon Stone. Let us know if you see anything familiar in the cover. A little reference to our first issue. We're celebrating two years and thirteen issues of the Wild Surge! If you have any recommendations for topics or if you'd like to write an article, post here or in the issue thread or send @deltago or myself a message. :) Contributors: @ashafetov, @deltago, @Fandraxx, @mlnevese, @Rik_Kirtaniya, @typo_tilly Special Thanks: @Silverstar Want more Surge? Any chances that it might happen? Or does the fact that these are DOS games pretty well kill the possibility? I really liked those games back in the day, especially Gateway to the Savage Frontier and Treasures of the Savage Frontier.

Weapon Profieciencies with IR

Which weapon proficiencies would you recommend for multi fighter/mage with Item Revisions. I can´t still decide. One possibility are Long Swords. There are plenty of them in both games and in BGII/TOB there are three of them which have enchatment of level + 4. The second choice is Staff. Even when Staff of Magi si nerfed with Item Revisions in some respects, it is still great weapon. Two Handed Swords are also decent choice, but I usually give them to Sarevok. What do you think?

Unpopular opinions

An idea has come to me to make a thread where we can share unpopular opinions about things in BG and other IE games. 1. Cernd is far from being useless NPC. In fact, he has tons of high-level druid spells and if CHARNAME is not a druid, than by not having a second class Cernd offers a lot of variety in lvl 6-7 spells if compared to Jaheira. If use the high-level druid spells right, almost any fight in SoA becomes a lot easier. 2. Darts can be a good choice as a ranged weapon for a fighter. Thalantyr's shop in BG1 has tons of useful darts, Sorcerous Sundries make it even better. There's an unlimited +3 dart on the first level of the Watcher's Keep, available not long after escaping from the Irenicus dungeon. Darts provide 3 APR and with addition APR from specialization and fighter class your darts stay a wonderful weapon from the Candlekeep and to the Hell. 3. 2 thieves in a party is not too much. I prefer to focus on setting traps and dispelling illusions with one of them and to hide in shadows for backstabs with another. Also, there're Open Locks and Disarm Traps skills. There're always multi-class options available. For example, your character can be a multiclass fighter/thief with amazing backstabs while Tiax or Jan Jansen is focused on setting traps to the place you lure your enemies to. Or maybe a half-orc assassin for backstabs and poison weapon and Hexxat for other thieving skills. 4. Mazzy's relatively low starting STR is not a problem. She has innate Strength spell, there're lots of STR-enhancing items in BG2, so that leaves you with a shorty fighter (and thus all saving throws bonuses) who has a chance to become GM in any weapon you like (or choose a standard short bow proficiency providing 5 APR with the Tuigan bow). 5. Keep trying using every and each consumables in any fight if you have any. You won't believe how easier it will become if your fighters nearly always have 22-23 STR for fights and get their saving throws improved drastically. Wands will often be enough to defeat even bosses. Carry on! Share the things that are relatively not popular among BG fans.

BG characters in 5th edition

$

I've been fiddling with 5th edition D&D a lot recently, and for fun, I decided to try and figure out what classes/"kits" the BG characters would be in 5E. No real reason for doing it, other than I was bored one day. I only did the BG2 NPCs, though, because I wasn't that bored. Anyway, I figured I'd post this in case any of you fine folks thought it was interesting, or had feedback to provide, or wanted to help me add the BG1 NPCs. I explicitly avoided multiclassing, as frankly 5E just wasn't made to accommodate it. This tends to put the multiclassed characters in fairly awkward spots, and I'm not always happy with my substitutions. Imoen: Bard, college of lore *Alternate: Rogue, arcane trickster This one was tricky, because it's a multiclass. College of Lore bard should give her sufficient access to the thief skills she uses, though, and it's a very good spellcasting class. Minsc: Barbarian, path of the totem warrior Barbarian just fits Minsc more than ranger. He's a berserker, and rangers don't berserk. Lore-wise, the totem warrior seems the most similar to the Rashemi berserkers. Aerie: Cleric, knowledge domain I figured a caster-cleric would fit her better than a mage, and knowledge is about as castery a domain as it gets. Nalia: Wizard, any I didn't really know what to do with Nalia. She's not a good enough thief to be a bard or arcane trickster, imo, so I think she just gets to be a wizard with a few thief skills. Keldorn: Paladin, oath of devotion What else would he be? Valygar: Ranger, hunter See Keldorn. Mazzy: Paladin, oath of devotion *Alternate: Fighter, champion She's a fighter in the game, but once you remove race restrictions, it's pretty clear she'd be a paladin. Jaheira: Druid, circle of the land (forest) *Alternate: Paladin, oath of the ancients The druid fits her better, I think, but she fights quite well, and paladins get a lot of spells in 5E. Oath of the ancients, for those who don't know, is basically to druids what a traditional paladin is to clerics. Yoshimo: Rogue, thief There's no trap specialist, so this is the best we can do. Anomen: Cleric, war domain *Alternate: Paladin, oath of vengeance I actually really like both these options, but cleric is probably better because we have a lot of paladins anyway. Jan: Wizard, illusionist *Alternate: Rogue, arcane trickster Similar dilemma to Imoen and Nalia. My intuition tells me to make him the wizard, but he's a better thief than either of them. Arcane trickster isn't a very good spellcaster, though. Haer’Dalis: Bard, college of valor It's a fighty bard. Sounds right to me. Cernd: Druid, circle of the moon Druid specializing in shapeshifting, with lycanthropic undertones. Yep. Korgan: Fighter, champion *Alternate: Barbarian, path of the berserker Fighter seems to fit better, but he is a berserker. Either one works, really. Viconia: Cleric, trickery domain Pretty straightforward. There's no darkness domain, but I think trickery's close enough. Edwin: Wizard, conjurer If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Sarevok: Fighter, battlemaster I figure this makes the most sense for him. After all, Sarevok is a thinky fighter, and battlemaster is more thinky than most. Rasaad: Monk, way of the four elements He's a monk, and he shoot fire. What more do you want? Neera: Sorcerer, wild magic Odd to have wild magic in the core rules, but convenient for our purposes. Dorn: Warlock, pact of the fiend (blade) *Alternate: Paladin, oathbreaker Dorn fits the description of a fiend pact warlock to a tee, right down to the patron-given sword, but it's a very strange take on his mechanics. Oathbreaker paladin keeps him more in line with his BG capabilities, but it's just not what he fundamentally is. Plus, melee warlocks are surprisingly fun. Hexxat: Rogue, assassin Assassin seems more fitting than thief or arcane trickster, but I'm honestly not entirely sure. Thoughts? Suggestions? Questions?
