The Road to v3.0

$

Are there any plans to do "The Road" to the 3.0 version of the game as it was done in the past? I'm sure 2.6 wont adress all the issues and game will still need some improvements. But 3.0 could be the final version of the game and we need to celebrate it some way. Sooo....are there plans for that? P.S. I really like the rewards in 2.0, especially pre-gen-halfling character with illegal class. If you ever do that again please make dwarven Inquisitor with some cool portrait or half-orc dragon disciple :)

Luck: What it is and how it works

This mini article discusses luck in the games. Most of the information here has been provided by @semiticgod.

The confusion

The concept of luck is never explained in the game or the manuals, and most of the information they provide about luck is either wrong or misleading. This mini article tries to clarify the confusion. The source of confusion is a number of inconsistencies in the manuals and the games:
  • Luck is the name of a spell, but it’s also the name of an effect, like the blinded effect or the confused effect. So far, so good. Intuitively, you would expect that the Luck spell would simply improve somebody’s luck. However, that’s not the case. The Luck spell does improve luck, but it also gives several other bonuses (to saving throws and thieving skills) which are unrelated to luck (the luck state, that is).
  • Both the luck effect and the Luck spell work differently in IWD2 and the rest of the games.
  • There are two kinds of luck effects, one which stacks and one which doesn’t. The luck obtained from the Luck spell, Chant, and the Lucky Scimitar in IWD does not stack. However, the luck obtained from other sources does. So…

What is luck?

Luck is an effect that affects a character's performance in combat. Positive luck means better performance, negative luck means worse performance.

What does it do?

As stated above, it does different things in different games:

All games bar IWD2

Luck affects to-hit rolls, spell damage taken and physical damage dealt. A lucky character hits more often, deals more damage with weapons, and takes less magical damage. By magical damage I mean all effects outside a weapon's base damage. That includes damage from spells, wands, abilities, weapon elemental damage, etc. Luck bonuses are added to each to-hit roll and physical damage roll, and substracted from each magical damage roll. Luck penalties work the other way around. But remember, this is AD&D, it’s always more complicated. Just adding a bonus to your roll would be too “simple”. And who wants something simple when you can have exactly the same thing, but twice as complicated? Well, you, me, the rest of the world… but not the AD&D creators, for sure. So this is the whole story: Each time a die is rolled and a luck modification applies, the modification is added or substracted from the roll, but without exceeding the roll natural limits. What? You didn’t understand that? Don’t worry, neither did I the first 200 times. Let's see: The "natural limits" of a roll are its maximum and minimum values. For instance, the natural limits of a d20 roll are 1 and 20. An example might help: Flint the warrior has a +2 luck bonus. He attacks twice with his long sword (1d6 damage). The first time he attacks he rolls a 15. Adding the luck bonus, his effective attack roll is 17 (hit). He rolls a 3 in his damage roll. The luck bonus means he actually inflicts 5 damage (we assume there aren’t other bonuses/penalties). The second time he rolls a 19 in his attack roll. The luck bonus would make that a 21, but since 21 is outside the natural limits of a d20 roll (1-20), it actually makes it a 20 (hit). By the way, he does NOT get a critical hit (unless he already had a critical with 19, of course). Then he rolls a 6 in his damage roll. Again, the luck bonus would make that an 8, but since 8 is outside the natural limits of a d6 (1-6), the result stays at 6, i.e., he only inflicts 6 points of damage. Now a 5th level mage casts a Fire Ball on our poor Flint. That’s 5d6 points of damage. The rolls of those 5 dice are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Without his luck bonus, Flint would take 1+2+3+4+5 = 15 points of damage. However, the luck bonus reduces the damage he takes. The 5 becomes a 3, the 4 becomes a 2, the 3 becomes a 1. But again, the luck effect cannot modify a roll beyond its natural limits (1-6 in this case), so the the 2 just becomes a 1 and the 1 remains unchanged. The result is that he takes 1+1+1+2+3 = 8 points of damage.

IWD2

Apart from the effects listed for the other games, in IWD2 luck also affects critical hit and critical miss chances (so in our previous example our warrior does make a critical when he rolls 19). That's especially useful because (1) nothing is immune to critical hits in IWD2, and (2) hammers, halberds, spears, arrows, and axes deal triple damage rather than double damage on critical hits.

How do you get lucky (or unlucky)?

This is a list of the sources of luck (positive or negative) in all the games (except Planescape:Torment, I don't have information about that one). Some of these sources only affect luck itself, others create other effects as well.

All games

Fatigue: -1 luck when the character becomes fatigued. An extra -1 for every extra four hours without resting. Intoxication: Penalty to luck and bonus to morale. The penalty goes from -2 to -12 and the bonus from +2 to +12, both depending on the amount of drink taken and the constitution of the character. The negative effects of the penalty always outweigh the benefits of the bonus. Slow Poison and Heal cure it.

All games bar IWD2 (i.e.: BG1, BG2, SoD and IWD)

Luck spell: +1 luck, +1 to saves, +5% thief skills. Chant: +1 luck, +1 to saves, +1 to healing rolls (Staff of Curing, Mass Cure spell, etc.)

BG series: BG1, BG2 and SoD

Bard Song (unkitted): +1 luck at level 1, +2 at level 15, +3 at level 20. Blade song: +1 luck (doesn't scale with level).

Baldur's Gate

Rabbit's Foot (Alora): +2 luck, +2 AC, +10% thief skills.

Baldur's Gate II

Wish spell: Two of its effects affect luck: One intoxicates enemies, giving them a -12 luck penalty for 200 rounds. It bypasses magic resistance and offers no saving throw. It is dispellable and can be blocked by Spell Immunity: Enchantment and possibly Minor Globe of Invulnerability, as it is a level 3 Enchantment spell. Slow Poison and Heal cure it. The other effect gives -5 luck for 60 seconds party-wide.

Icewind Dale

Lucky Scimitar: +1 luck. Tymora's Melody: +1 luck, +3 to saving throws, +5% thief skills.

Icewind Dale 2

Luck spell: +1 luck. Tymora's Melody: +1 luck, +3 to saving throws, +2 to thief skills, Alchemy, and Knowledge (Arcana). Tymora's Loop (extremely rare random drop): +3 luck. Breaking the mirror in the Ice Temple: -20 luck. Chant: Unknown. Note: Originally this post was a set of questions about luck. I include the original post in the spoiler for reference:
I’m trying to understand the concept of luck in the game, but most of the information I’ve found is confusing or contradictory. I’ve compiled information from the manuals and the forums trying to clarify it:

Manuals

Survival Guide:
  • While the [bard] song is playing, the party’s morale and luck are higher.
  • A character can continue to operate at peak efficiency for 24 hours in game-time (2 hours realtime). After that, the characters will start to complain and their attributes begin to suffer. For every four hours beyond this 24-hour mark, the player will receive a –1 luck penalty (–1 to all rolls).
  • Intoxicated characters gain a morale bonus, but receive a luck penalty.
MM&M:
  • Luck spell: The recipient of this spell is lucky in everything they do for the next 3 rounds, receiving a 5% bonus to any actions. This includes Saving Throws, to-hit rolls, thieving skills, etc.
Adventurer’s guide:
  • Fatigued characters suffer a –1 penalty to luck; every four hours after becoming fatigued, this penalty increases by one. […] Luck affects every d20 roll your character makes.
  • THAC0 and Armor Class: The d20 roll can also be modified by circumstances such as spells, special abilities, and luck.
  • Luck spell: This spell’s recipient is lucky in everything they do for 3 rounds. They receive a +1 bonus to all actions, including Saving Throws, to-hit rolls, thieving skills, and anything else requiring a d20 roll. Contradictory: Thieving skills don't use d20 rolls.
Summary:
  • Stuff that affects luck:
    • Bard song: Unspecified bonus.
    • Intoxication: Unspecified penalty.
    • Fatigue: -1 penalty for every four hours fatigued.
    • Luck spell: 5% bonus to all actions (?). Alternatively, +1 bonus to all actions.
  • Effects of luck:
    • -1 to all rolls for each -1 penalty.
    • Affects Saving Throws, to-hit rolls, thieving skills, etc.
    • Affects d20 rolls.

Forum

These are summaries of the most interesting posts I've read. They're not quotes, so I hope I got them right:
  • @lunar: Luck adjusts damage rolls. When casting offensive spells which involve dice rolling your luck bonus is added to each die roll, up to the maximum die roll result.
  • @JuliusBorisov: A luck bonus reduces the damage taken from magic and elemental damage by one point per die, down to a minimum of 1.
  • @Semiticgod: There are two different effects called luck, and they work in more or less different ways.
  • @Ark_Tolei: Luck doesn’t affect damage (dealt or taken).

Conclusion

My completely uneducated guess is that the key to understanding this is this post by semiticgod. If I get that right (and I probably don’t) the source of the confusion is the fact that the word “luck” is used in the game to describe two different effects rather than one. These two effects work similarly in some aspects and differently in others, hence the contradictions and the confusion. What do you think?

The General Questions Thread

So I got to thinking, while I often have general questions about various aspects of the game, it's rather bothersome to clutter up the activity page with random questions, especially when I have as many as I do. So I came up with this idea. This is a general questions thread that anyone can contribute to, both with questions and answers. Ask a question, hopefully it'll be answered. (and with the efficiency of the community here, I wouldn't be surprised if it's answered rapidly.) I doubt things will become too cluttered, so it'll be a nice way for us to help each other out. Now, I don't THINK this has been done before, but if so, then do what needs to be done, dear mods, as you generally know best. Without further explanation, here's the first question I have. If I were to complete Anomen's quest line, would he retain the stat boost if I teleport him to me in ToB? The character I'm working with would be unlikely to take him through all of SoA, but due to Aerie's... "problems" in ToB, my main character would want to leave her where she's safe, but that leaves a clerical gap in the party. Obviously Anomen would fill that hole nicely, but I don't know if he'll keep all of his bonuses from me completing his quest. In theory, I will be taking only five characters through the end of SoA, so if I have to bring Anomen along it's not a deal breaker, but for RP reasons it makes more sense to simply bring him to me when I need him.

Finally completed my first full saga SCS + Ascension playthrough since 2006! (all warrior party)

It's been 12 years in the making, but I have finally done it (again). :) When i first got BG1 and later BG2+ToB in my teens around the year 2000, i played a lot. Really a LOT. I ran characters from BG1 to halfway through SoA. Ran from BG2 to ToB, but somehow never managed to complete a full saga run until years later in 2006 (with a solo sorcerer no less). Then i took a break, vowing myself to return someday and do a full party run through the saga with SCS and Ascension installed (i missed the character interaction and roleplay elements). I became a dad and got a full time job so this never came to be.... until 2012 when BGEE was released. I fiddled around with the game a bit but never really got quite to finish even the first part due to restartitis. :) I did not really touch the game much aside from a few a futile attempts for a few years. Last summer, i decided to do it... roleplaying, minimal reload, SCS + Ascension playthrough included the never played before Siege of Dragonspear. It's been quite a journey (about 3 months of play time), but 20 minutes ago my dwarven barbarian finally planted his axe inside Mellisan gut for good and ascended the Throne of Bhaal. I guess there is no real point to this thread other then proclaim my love for these games and how they changed my life. I enjoyed the new NPCs, i enjoyed SoD (it felt more like IWD then BG at times but considering the setting, it didn't feel out of place). The new areas were well done, and the content was enjoyable. I romanced Dorn throughout the saga (Sarevok, Dorn and Korgan were in my party) and perhaps the only downside to the EE's was the lack of content for Dorn in ToB and SoD (they did nothing knew with him in SoD and i was surprised the whole Ur-Gothoz storyline just vanished in ToB). But just wanna say, thank you thank you Beamdog for delivering me a nostalgic yet refreshing gaming experience. That's all, rant over. :D

Custom NPC Portraits Masterthread [Spoilers, obviously]

Hello everyone :) First of all, I am aware, that there already exist some threads about custom NPC portraits but I found them all to be rather confusing, so here is my attempt to make a proper masterthread where everyone can easily find whatever portrait(s) they want to use for their game. This thread is under constant construction! That's why I highly encourage you to post your own works and finds here (don't forget to source), so that I can add them to the startpost. So check back once in a while, in case there may be the perfect portrait you have always been looking for ;) Here are a few highly subjective* "quality ensurance" guidelines: 1. The portraits shouldn't clash too much with the in-game art styles (i.e. too cartoony, cell-shading, b/w, etc.) --- Exception: Complete packs with portraits for most/all NPC companions 2. No simple "facelifts" (meaning that they are only mildly photoshopped versions of the official ones; it would be nice though if someone else could make a different masterthread for these) 3. No obvious "facesteals" (i.e. popular actors, characters from other media, etc.) and joke portraits 4. They should resemble the original designs to at least some degree (i.e. don't just suggest any random drow portrait for Viconia) 5. They need to fit size wise. If half the face would be cut off or there would be too much negative space for the in-game version, it's out. *that means that there are almost certainly going to be folks who will disagree with my decisions on wether an image goes into the gallery or not Depending on how this thread goes, I might sharpen or lighten the guidelines on the go.

Can't decide on next solo class

I am looking to solo again! I've done a F/M/T before, and an inquisitor. It's been a while so I wouldn't mind doing it again. I am normally a hack and slash kind of guy, so I like getting my APR really high and buffing my strength through Crom Faeyr. Normally go for 10apr with a FMT using crom in the mainhand and scarlet ninja to in the offhand, but this time around I don't think I am going to do 10apr. Would rather just go 8-9apr and use some really nice weapons. Was thinking maybe a F/M with Bastard Sword mainhand, plus crom in the offhand? I guess technically warhammers are the best weapons in the game due to bonuses vs. plate and higher AC, right? Although I remember there being a really OP bastard sword that heals you and you can upgrade it to a +5. I was also considering playing a Berserker->Mage but not sure if fighter mage is better. Also was considering a fighter/thief but i'd like to play without thieving skills for once as I think stealth, UAI, and traps are pretty cheese. I've also never played a mage character with mage HLAs as the FMT doesn't get the mage HLAs. Typical gear would be helm of balduran, gauntlets of extra spec, robe of vecna, etc. So, F/M, Berserker (7? 9? 13?) -> mage? Or something else? Not interested in playing a midget :) thoughts?

Any mod that actually makes monk decent?

$

I've compiled a list of opinions I very much agree with from the .net. I think they hit right in the spot, monk is bad and should be avoided: > monk suffers from too little too late, and it is exacerbated by the Monty Hall early game loot of Bg2. By the time you are good in melee, everyone is also good in melee. By the time your fists are pumping out what appears to be good damage, everyone melee-specialized has uber gear that outperforms the monk fist damage. The average base damage on the highest damage fists is 10.5. Purely from a damage perspective it will be outdone by weapons like daystar and FoA +3 without even counting specialization bonuses or potential extra attacks--extremely early game items. By the time your AC is pretty respectable, your AC becomes mostly irrelevant as the ToB enemies will easily hit you with their high APR unless you have a massive AC, making you mostly rely on damage resistance to stay in melee for any extended period of time. They even have some gameplay annoyances like their movement speed because you usually don't want them in front of the team but they get their speed boost and off they go messing up your formation and putting their skirt-like AC on the front lines for everyone to swing/shoot at. > 1d10(5.5 avg damage) is a joke compared to easy to get early game weapons like Daystar(11 avg damage), FoA(10.5), and Lilarcor(8.5), celestial fury(8.5 without counting procs). Especially when all these but lila can be paired with belm, also ridiculously easy to get early game weapon. It all gets even worse wehen you consider fighters can start Bg2 with grandmastery already in place which gives an additional attack per round plus something like -3 thaco and +5 damage. > Add that fighters can get extra attacks with haste or improved haste, which Monks are "immune" to. And that a Fighter can use a "speed weapon" (Belm, Kundane) without penalties if they put the proficiency points. The Ninja-to of the Scarlet Brotherhood is, ironically, more useful to a Fighter/Thief dual or multi-class with UAI because of the proficiency points in the two weapon style. > No armor means terrible AC from start to finish, you're outclassed by both fighters and mages in this department by quite a bit. No improved haste means 5 attacks per round max, which means you're taking whirlwind to stay competitive and not crit strike like fighters get. No helmet means full damage from crits, so if you play on any difficulty other than core you're going to explode into tiny pieces quickly. No bonus hp from con means d8 hp +2 MAX per level. So we have a class that is supposed to melee, but has less HP, less AC, less attacks per round, and can't wear a helmet. All they get is MR and some fun abilities that don't offer a penalty to saves, meaning they fail all the time.

Problem with Spellhold mods...

hi i'm sorry if this is not the right place to ask for this but i truly have no idea where else to ask this, for some weeks now i have not been able to access the spelldhold studios website, this first started when i tried to download some mods for BGEE and BG2EE, instead of taking me to the mod page in the spellhold website all i got was this message (which by the way i still get when i try to go into the page) "An error occured with the SQL server: This is not a problem with the IPS Community Suite but rather with your SQL server. Please contact your host and copy the message shown above", after that i tried to just go into the main website directly to see if it was just the specific mod page that wasn't working but lo and behold i found this other message "Database Error: Unable to connect to your database. Your database appears to be turned off or the database connection settings in your config file are not correct. Please contact your hosting provider if the problem persists." i sincerely have no idea what either of this are and what i found searching in google and youtube for the past week or so just helped to confuse me more, i'm sorry if this has nothing to do with this forum but right now i'm truly desperate if anybody knows what happened and how i can fix it please please answer me

Even if just in mod form, Baeloth is too great of a character to be constrained within only BG:EE and SOD and would make an exceptionally companion for BG2. I understand that he has things to do with the Black Pits, but he's just too good to pass up.

How does spell disruption work?

$

Ok so I see that an alteration spell is being cast, I want to disrupt that spell via damage (melee, range, energy or arcane damage), I hit, sometimes the spell is disrupted and sometimes the spell caster carries on and casts anyway. I am genuinely curious to know: - What is the chance to disrupt a casting via damage? - Does the level of the caster make a difference? - Does the damage type make a difference? I rarely ever see poison failing to disrupt a spell, is this because it often acts so many times per round or does it actually have a higher chance to disrupt? - Does the caster type (cleric, druid, sorcerer or mage) make a difference? - Does what they cast from (scroll, innate, arcane/divine spell-book) make a difference? I recently read an @semiticgod post about the acid kensai saying scrolls are harder to disrupt (which prompted this topic) if so, what is the % difference in chance to disrupt. I used to believe, way back, that clerics were harder to disrupt than mages and often used other means to avoid their spells than damage disrupting, whereas mages I would happily disrupt via damage providing I had gotten past whatever protection was needed to do so. Recently however (since EE) I seem to disrupt clerics just fine. Was this belief mistaken all along or did EE change anything in that regard? I know some casters have undisruptable spells, generally I am not talking about these, although it would be useful to know who they are. Mulahey, I believe is one. TLDR: What are the mechanics behind the chance to disrupt a spell via melee, range, energy or arcane damage? Thanks in advance!

Did you *actually* know?

I started posting random trivia about Baldur's Gate and Co. on the activity page, but it have become so many that I decided to start a new topic. If you yourself know an interesting piece of trivia, feel free to share. Either way, here we go: Did you know? Alora isn't a halfling, she actually is a really short and petite gnome. Bhaal and Cyric used to be lovers but Bhaal cheated on him with his sister which is why Cyric killed him. Dynaheir sings "These boots are made for walking" by Nancy Sinatra because Dynaheir used to be Nancy Sinatra's old D'n'D player character. CHARNAME isn't actually a Bhaalspawn, they were accidentally switched as a newborn with the temple's janitor's child. Alaundo's prophecy is just a fraud. There is a squirrel with a powerful magic ring somewhere in the original Baldur's Gate. Icewind Dale was named after Dale Ace Windy, a famous Canadian popstar from the 80s. If you shoot a Magic Missile at Gorion in the very beginning of the original Baldur's Gate in Candlekeep, he will give you some very useful potions in return. Adventure Y was originally supposed to be called Adventure Z but the devs reconsidered to avoid a potential legal suite from Bandai because of the similarity to Dragonball Z. Kivan never had a wife, he just made the story up as part of his wrestling persona. Sarevok was voiced by Jaleel White, who is most famous for his role as Steve Urkel in the 90s sitcom "Family Matters". Nothing can stop the Smooze. Edwin is actually a virgin, he is just overcompensating all the time. When your familiar dies you may lose one constitution point, but if you keep it's corpse, Cromwell will forge a Katana +4, +2 bleeding damage/ round for 10 rounds from it. There are actually no spambots on these forums, the mods just ban random people because the motherbrain tells them to do so. If you wish to save Clara you need to choose the following dialogue options after meeting her: 2, 4, 1, 1, 3 There is a glitch that let's you one-hit Beholders, if you cast barkskin *and* stoneskin on yourself and then attack them with a Quarterstaff +1. Gorion and Jaheira used to be a couple back in the day.

Which mod it is?

From TvTropes: In the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion for the original game, the resolution of the Werewolf Island subquest is rather tragic. There is one particular character — the friendliest one in the village and pretty much the only one who doesn't hold your outsider status against you — who you can do favors for such as retrieving a cloak and delivering him/her (depending on your player character's gender) flowers. If you pick the nicer dialogue options, the journal entries reveal that you are becoming increasingly fond of him/her. If you offer to take him/her with you to the mainland to start a new life together, he/she will consider it but ultimately refuse out of fear and lingering attachment to the village. That's sad enough. After The Reveal that the villagers are all dangerous werewolves, he/she helps you to evade them and shows you an escape route. Your new friend and nascent Love Interest still refuses to leave and decides to fight the other villagers to buy time for you — and it's heavily implied he/she doesn't survive. The journal entry covering this ends with the words "...I wish..." There is, however, a mod in the works which will allow said villager to join your party in the second game (and even become a full fledged Love Interest). So a nice Fan Retcon on what would otherwise have been quite a Downer Ending.

If you'd like to write an article or draw art for an article, email the.wild.surge@gmail.com or send me or @deltago a message. :) The sorts of articles we're looking for are book reviews, mod reviews, game reviews, game first impressions, character overviews, short stories or vignettes, poems, custom D&D rules (e.g., for BG, IWD, or pen and paper), and similar things. If you'd like to draw art for articles (e.g., like the shields in the 5e dwarven defender rules article) or for stories, give us a shout. Our primary focus are IE games, then other D&D games and books, then other RPGs, then other genres. For every issue, we're aiming to have a game or book review, a mod review, a poem, and Corpse's Corner. Most articles are 500 to 3000 words. We post theme issues, where most articles match the issue's theme. For stories, we're undecided on including fan fiction (e.g., stories of your BG characters). For now, we're just interested in stories written in an original story universe. Orcs and elves are fine... just don't use, say, Forgotten Realms gods or cities or characters. Writers retain the rights to re-publish their works in other publications and media. If you have any general questions about contributing, feel free to ask here. Demographics Poll: What is your sex/gender?

This is the first in a series of polls to measure the demographics of the Beamdog community (I was just curious). The poll is anonymous by default, but you're welcome to discuss the issue publicly if you like. I'll be creating separate polls for race, nationality, political affiliation, and religion later on, but the polls will be spread out over time so they don't push a bunch of threads off of Page 1.

these guys do podcasts talking about games they play. every winter they do a long rpg and this year they are doing bg 2. so far there is just episode 1 which is just the intro dungeon and should be updated every Thursday. with ep 2 being chapter 2, ep 3 spellhold to the underdark and ep 4 being the rest. throne of bhall will be it's own series. https://www.watchoutforfireballs.com/217 if you liked what you hear they also did a series on planescape torment, fallout 1,2,3,and new vegas, neverwinter nights 2 [ both oc and motb], and witcher 3.

One of the aspects of these games that I always appreciate on return playthroughs is the soundtrack, areas like Waukeen's Promenade really come alive. Do you have a favourite track?
