Custom NPC Portraits Masterthread [Spoilers, obviously]

Hello everyone :)

First of all, I am aware, that there already exist some threads about custom NPC portraits but I found them all to be rather confusing, so here is my attempt to make a proper masterthread where everyone can easily find whatever portrait(s) they want to use for their game.

This thread is under constant construction!
That's why I highly encourage you to post your own works and finds here (don't forget to source), so that I can add them to the startpost. So check back once in a while, in case there may be the perfect portrait you have always been looking for ;)

Here are a few highly subjective* "quality ensurance" guidelines:
1. The portraits shouldn't clash too much with the in-game art styles (i.e. too cartoony, cell-shading, b/w, etc.)
--- Exception: Complete packs with portraits for most/all NPC companions
2. No simple "facelifts" (meaning that they are only mildly photoshopped versions of the official ones; it would be nice though if someone else could make a different masterthread for these)
3. No obvious "facesteals" (i.e. popular actors, characters from other media, etc.) and joke portraits
4. They should resemble the original designs to at least some degree (i.e. don't just suggest any random drow portrait for Viconia)
5. They need to fit size wise. If half the face would be cut off or there would be too much negative space for the in-game version, it's out.
*that means that there are almost certainly going to be folks who will disagree with my decisions on wether an image goes into the gallery or not

Depending on how this thread goes, I might sharpen or lighten the guidelines on the go.

Looking for a BG portrait in IWD

I used to have all the BG portraits in IWD. Sorcerer's Place has such a pack. However, one portrait is missing: the blond elf girl with the green cap. I can't find it as a downloadable portraits for the life of me.
Could anyone help me out, please?

I would like to show you early version portrait of Cernd, Anomen, Viconia and Mazzy.
I dug them out from BG2 Demo files.
The most interesting are Anomen and Cernd. Especially Cernd, he looks like an indian shaman. What a interesting concept! And what do you think about that?

I've decided to make a chronological list of all the FR novels, comics and games and list what year they take place in the Forgotten Realms universe, since I am collecting the audiobooks of the novels and playing the games, and I also want to educate you all on the chronology of the Forgotten Realms, which novel, comic or game takes place in what year, who wrote that novel/comic/game and who developed them and whatnot. Some stories extend on for years, decades or centuries before they end. I hope you guys enjoy looking this over, piecing together the time frame of almost every FR novel, comic and game is not easy. The only way Drizzt and his companions come to Amn and meet Gorion's Ward is if the final half of SoA and all of ToB takes place in 1370 DR, after Sea of Swords ends and before The Hunter's Blades Trilogy begins since SoA begins on Mirtul of 1369 DR, and there are tons of side quests to kill time on until the year ends and locations like Athkatla and Trademeet are further apart than the game depicts, so it is possible.

Confusing, isn't it? Why is the novel version set in 1368 DR? I'll explain, because I've read it. The prologue of the ToB book is set in 1368 DR, but after the prologue ends, the author somehow forgot to make it clear that the rest of the story takes place in the "present day", therefore the continuity of the novel version Baldur's Gate series is seriously thrown out of order, Throne of Bhaal is before Shadows of Amn even though it should be the other way around, because Jaheira gets killed off by Abazigal, and Imoen gets killed off by Sendai, and in SoA, Jaheira and Imoen are alive, except for Jaheira, she had been recently revived from getting killed by Sarevok towards the end of the BG1 novel.

Rannek, one of the main characters in this game, was briefly mentioned in "The Two Swords" as a member of the Riders of Nesmé, and the city Nesmé was overrun by an army of trolls in 1370 DR during the book's story, and Rannek was the only survivor of the Riders of Nesmé. In this game during the stand at Mithral Hall with Zhai, Illius, Thibbledorf and Drizzt against the troll army, Rannek found the chance to avenge Nesmé and his fallen friends who was members of the Riders of Nesmé by slaying the troll king.

Half-Goblinoid as a playable race

I don't know how to mod and I'm basically thinking on EEKeeper my way to play this. This post is a contribution and a call for feedback. I don't post this in the "Goblin as a playable race" because I think is too long to just put it in the middle of the thread and pretend is cool.

I am interested in the specific half-goblin.

They propose:
Ability Score Adjustments
+2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, -2 Charisma: Half-goblins are quick and tough, but are hideous little creatures

It's all in the link (amazing background bulk of info), but other traits are a bonus to Steal, Stealth, Infravision, and the use of poisons. I think for Baldur's Gate this is too powerful. If you can use poisons like an assassin, there should be more penalties somewhere.

Is considered small, but I don't see it that way. Is suggested one of the parents is a gnome or halfling, but I am thinking in something like human or elf. So Medium.

Is an archetype I had since many years ago in table top and i'd feel great to play it on BG. I see it like something between Nett the Brave and 2-D from Gorrilaz. I was going to use an elf paperdoll with a hue of green or gray skin. Also, my character is going to be a Swashbuckler or a Kensai/Thief.

My questions are:

-So should it have more downsides?

-In EEKeeper, what race should i put? I'm between Goblin, Human, or Half Elf.

-Maybe medium races and small races can not breed? In that case, I'd be looking for hob-goblins, bugbears, or even just a "plain" half orc that is like the Danny Devito of Half Orcs... But I want reasons to role play a very mischievous and trickster character, and have a +1 to Dex. Is it that I am looking for some other race or subrace that I have't thought about and has the characteristics I am looking for?

Jargon


Buff: An effect that provides a bonus or defense.
Debuff: The contrary of a buff. An effect that impacts negatively a creature in some way other than reducing their hit points.
Disabler: A spell which imposes a negative effect different than damage or debuffing.
EE Keeper: A continuation of Shadow Keeper. An Infinity Engine saved game editor for the Enhanced Editions. It allows you to modify a vast array of data in a saved game.
Infinity Engine: A game engine is the core of one or more games, the base on top of which the contents of the games (like characters, quests, etc.) are built. Games based on the same engine work in a very similar way, a player familiar with one of those games will find it easy to learn how to play another. The Infinity Engine is the engine used for the Baldur’s Gate series, the Icewind Dale series and Planescape:Torment.
Lua: Programming language used for the User Interface and game options. Important for UI modders and users of custom portrait sets.
Magic attack: A type of debuff that removes certain magical defenses. For example, Breach only removes specific protections and combat protections, while Pierce Magic only removes spell protections.
Mod: Short for “modification”. A modification to one of the games. They are files or programs which add or modify aspects of the games. Examples of features modified or added are rules, characters, classes, quests, items, dialogues, spells and abilities.
Mod manager: A mod that installs and sets up other mods, trying to prevent conflicts between them.

Are darts the most under-appreciated weapon?

Darts get no love in this game. The one NPC with a clear love of darts is used as semi-comic relief early in the first game, but yet he inspired me! What is the maximum potential of this neglected weapon?

Well, we'll start with the good news: 3 attacks per round. We will want to hit hard and often, so looking for +damage to boost our output, each boost is automatically tripled! And we can do this single-weapon style or while holding down a shield, for an early AC boost.

Then the bad news starts - no strength bonus. We do get a great THAC0 bonus from max dex early in the game, but dex is the least boostable stat over the length of BG saga - I have no idea if it plays any better in IWD, but I get the impression that has significantly fewer stat boosts, so STR-based weapons might not get ahead as easily?

However, we can get a weapon specialization bonus, for 1+THAC0/+2 damage for any impure fighter class (such as a paladin or a multi class) and a whopping +3/+5 for 5 pips as a 9th level pure-breed fighter. This comes win a bonus 4th APR, and as we are straight fighter, we pick up another 1/2 APR at 7th and 13th, leading to 5 APR (unhasted) doing +5 damage - but can we do better?

The obvious place to look is kits, but we are spectacularly unlucky. As a fighter, I would want something like the Kensai kit, which grants extra damage every few levels for melee weapons, but bans range weapons. It happens to boost throwing weapons that double as melee weapons, which is every other throwing weapon in the game that is not a dart, oh, and they get the strength damage bonus too. So no help there. Never mind, Archers provide a similar bonus for missile weapons, but guess what? Throwing weapons are not missile weapons either - so dart is the ONLY weapon in the game that can benefit from neither of those significant boosters. Still, all is not lost!

First, we can play an assassin. That gives us an extra +1 THAC0 and +1 damage from level 1, plus the use of poison which plays super well without many APR. So option (1) is a 2 level dip into assassin, dealing at the first opportunity so that we do not lose out on too many fighter hit points, and giving up any idea of a fighter kit (they don't help darts builds much anyway).

Option 2 is a longer-term bet that will not pay off until late into ToB - swashbuckler. Swashes get +1/+1 THAC0/damage bonus every 5 levels, so +5/+5 at 25th level, costing 3.3 million xp. 26th level fighter will run you another 4.5 million xp, totaling 7.8Mxp, just under the 8 million cap. It is possible! But highly unlikely solo, and gives up a lot of HLAs. Also, you are not going to get 27th level fighter, that is 50kxp over the xp cap. But I think that is our ultimate build for unassisted damage output - +8/+10 THAC0/damage at 5 APR from weapon style and dualed kit. You will see this so late that it will not be relevant, but may be fun to cross off on the "Hey, I did it!" list. Console jockeys can have fun too.

A more reasonable dual from swash at 20th means "only" 2.2 million xp into Swash, and hitting 21st fighter at a further 3,250,000 xp. I have had a 6 person party hitting around 5Mxp completing SoA with a good deep dive into Watcher's Keep, so this is totally doable for a straight BG play through, although unlikely to repay the dual until early ToB. The extra 5 levels of swash seem unconvincing for an extra +1/+1. Conversely, taking swash to 40 for +8/+8 also seems a poor choice, as you give up the weapon specialization. You do not even get the +1/+2 from basic specialization playing a Swash, as darts are still not melee weapons. Finally, you will have only 3 APR rather than the fighter's 5, although you are still getting more than half the attacks, so it is not a big a penalty as for builds around more useful weapons :)


Of course, the next consideration is: is there any good kit to boost the weapons for me? The most obvious is the gauntlets of weapon specialization, which give a further +1/+2 in BG, where they are easily obtained towards the end of act 3, or a +2 THAC0 bonus, if preferred, from the aforementioned comic relief. Unfortunately, the BG2 version of those gloves is buried deep in Watcher's Keep, and comes with a bonus 1/2 APR that you won't be able to use (if fighter) as the game caps APR to 5 without magical assistance (enhanced haste only?)

Speaking of improved haste, Cespenar can make an improved cloak of protection which casts improved haste once per day, pushing us briefly to 10 APR. Likewise, the ring of gaxx will give us another 3 castings per day.

In the helm slot, the Helm of Balduran can give another +1 THAC0, but no extra damage.

Not much notable in the armors, although Shurrupak plate packs a +1 dex bonus, which may or may not be helpful.

Nothing great jumps out of the amulet, belt, boots, or shield slots, although the shield of Balduran -1 STR penalty is not going to be a concern when chasing down beholders with darts :)

For cloaks, the other strong candidate is cloak of the stars, to make 6 +5 darts/day. Alternate cloaks to make the most of their abilities.

Finally, we come to the darts themselves. Stock a variety of special purpose darts that do +1d6 damage of various elements, or cause wounding etc. These are more useful in BG2 and later, as the high APR barrage of damage is enough for most non-magical foes in BG1.

For BG2, there is only one game in town - make a beeline for the first floor of Watcher's keep and the +3 returning crimson dart, which will be your mainstay for the rest of the game.


So at the end of the day, is a dart build feasible? Well, generally any build is feasible in this game, and it is certainly not awful. I have a lot of fun playing my darts builds. The most glaring omission in the BG series is the lack of any distinct boost at all focused on darts. It would be nice to have just one new kit added, perhaps for halflings, that gave the kensai/archer bonus for thrown weapons. Then it will still likely be a poor relation to thrown weapons with a STR bonus, but would be closer to the fore of the crazy builds.

Main thing in favor of this build is high APR multiplying any damage bonuses, and novelty. Down side is darts do piercing damage, very little damage without bonus, and even have a poor range compared to bows - you are not sniping safely out of harm's way.

Now I'm no Sales/Marketing genius by a long shot, but I would think that this just might reduce sales to a degree, I myself wanted to buy 2 copies for friends in other regions.
IMO considering this game is in the online world...encompasses the whole world, one would think this would have been made a non-issue by now.

UPDATE: Went shopping this morning, my card (I used for purchase @BD) has been blocked, could not use for some reason so this could be the problem am having at BD purchase...Have to wait till Monday though to find out why. *It's always something, one hurdle after another :/

Simple question about throwing dagger/axe

Hello,

A very simple question, but i don't find a clear answer.

If you use boomrang dagger Main hand + 1 APR Off hand (Belm/kundane/scarlet)
You gain + 1 APR in melee but when you throw it?

I want to play a swash/war multi dwarf ... ok ok i asume it
with throwing dagger and Qstaff for BS. May i wast 2 pip in TWF for extra APR off hand? or nothing in off hand?

Baldur's Gates 3 through 73 will be DLCs telling the stories of various Bhaalspawn.

All narrated by David Warner.

To compete with FO76, BG74 will be a MMORPG/tower defense/farm simulation hybrid with platformer elements.
