Your Most Epic Moments

$

Recently I've been inspired by a board I saw called "Your Greatest Facepalm Moments" so I decided to start 2018 off with a bang by creating the opposite of that.

What are some of your most epic moments? Thoroughly crushing your enemies? Fighting for ages and barely escaping with your life? Performing the most amazing and hard fought near victory you ever had in your life that would rival an anime battle? Pulling off an incredible feat that you swear you couldn't do again if you tried? Taking very little damage from something that is supposed to annihilate you? A combination of these?

Post your most amazing and epic moments ever right here in my very first board of 2018.

Half Orc or Dwarf

After playing exclusively as half orc as my default race due to the 19 str 18 dex 19 con and loving the paperdoll of the half orc fighter I am on the brink of switching all my admiration to the Dwarf.
I got over the revulsion of my sprite being so small. And its all because of the saving bonus. After reading @Grum adventures of his Dwarven Defender I rolled one up and did a full playthrough. And like him I solo'd Drizzt and Sarevok. And after weighing the pros and cons of extra damage versus better saving throws I think better saves win out.
Anyways convince me to jump ship from Half Orc to Dwarf.

Your Signature Character Class

Everyone has a unique playstyle, both in terms of the classes they play and the items and spells they rely on to survive. What class best represents the way you play the game?

For me, it's a highly defensive gnomish cleric/illusionist who always memorizes rescue options like Teleport Field and Invisibility 10' Radius, and always buffs with Chaotic Commands and Death Ward to block Chaos spells or instant death effects that could otherwise bring an end to a no-reload run.

Kitties aside, it's time for rules. Let me see, here...

Keep It Clean-ish: Let's keep this thread PG-13.
-I'm not saying "Let's make jokes that are appropriate for Leave It To Beaver!", just avoid the profanity and sexual content.
Don't Spoil The Fun!: As far as spoilers go, well, it'd be mighty fine if you could put spoiler tags ( [ spoiler ] [ /spoiler ] , without the spaces) around such things, so people new to this game in need of a quick giggle don't get spoiled like I did on Wikipedia in 2006. :( Now I regard spoilers twice as much.
Play Nice: Like Alora says, "Careful, everyone, play nice!". This is a "space" for us to have fun. Let's play nice, and not bait or antagonize (troll) others.
Something Is Wrong, Here...: SCARY_WIZARD thinks you should contact some moderators if a rule appears to have been broken. We have, to my knowledge, @Dee (formerly Aosaw, if you've been absent for a while; the sentientest wombat I ever read things from!), @mInevese, @Nathan, @Coriander, @LadyRhian, @Cuv, @CamDawg (THEY MAKE COOL THINGS), @Jalily, @Metalloman, or any of the other Staff members (whose text happens to be on a blue or grey background).
PLEASE, let us not discuss what caused the other thread to be locked, lest this one get locked, as well, and future meme threads be prohibited!

Here's the last thread, in all its high-larious glory: http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/3079/baldur-s-gate-meme-thread-spoilers-all-over-the-place/ . A hoot and a half, especially when there was a whole page of CATS! I love cats.

Here's how to post an image, if you're like me and know HTML and vB Code/UBB Code, but are derpy.
Copy this: image, and paste it, replacing "LINKGOESHERE" with the URL of the image you want to post. Attaching is cool, too, but you might be like me and want to just link.
Here's some stuff on formatting your posts: forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/161/how-to-format-your-posts/p1
I don't do that, but I'm not exactly the best example, am I.

A couple custom portraits for BGII

So with the new Dynasty Warriors on the horizon, I decided to make a couple portraits for personal use. Since they're made, I figured I might as well share them. Unfortunately, the stock image I used for one of them didn't have a transparent background and it's been too long since I've done anything beyond the use of Paint, so my job is shoddy patchwork. But it still looks nice overall, I think. I absolutely love Xu Sheng for this, because he legitimately looks how I can picture the Bhaalspawn protagonist.

Also, different portrait sizes because I forgot how EE custom portraits work!

Here's some previews of what they look like in-game:

Howdy all,

I was wondering, who here think it would be an interesting ideal if one of the Mods, started a RP thread or section in the Forums. Of course the setting would be in the Forgotten Realms, and it could grow from there from feedback from the community. I think it would be fun and interesting, our own, little Paper and Pen DnD section.

Retcon overconnection of dots is a pox upon storytelling

$

What is overconnection of dots? I will use Star Wars as an example. The droids R2D2 and C3PO are in episode 1 revealed to be built by Anakin. Why? Can they just not be droids who have been with the rebellion? In fact, does that not make them more interesting? Indeed it does, and such is the curse of overconnection.

Now, please keep in mind that overconnection is different from simply telling more backstory. Staying in the Star Wars universe, Rogue One told more backstory without overcennecting (with the possible exception of the very end).

Overconnection stems from a desire to tie the bag together - unnecissarily! It has been around for ages; Jesus's apprentice Mary Magdalene, for instance, WAS not a prostitute, despite popular belief. There is in the bible a prostitute called Mary and later there is an apprentice called Mary... and 700 or 300 or whatever years later, a cabal of priests decided they were the same person, with no evidence what so ever to support that notion.

So, why should one avoid overconnecting? Because it, invariably, makes the story less interesting.

You need more evidence before you are convinced? Sure thing!

The trade federation making the plans for the death star = blargh!
Jon Snow being of noble dragon lord origin = hand me a bucket!
The new alien movies revealing aliens to be experimental weapons = I will hug the toilett all night long!!!

Final remark; note that overconnecting is different from "fantastic encounters" which is a fine practice. What is a fantastic encounter then? Well, you take one story and overlap with another story, in orders to force two interesting agents to interact. For instance; aliens versus predator. It, too, have been around for ages. For instance, Herodes died before Jesus was born. Their encounter is forced, due to the interesting "What if?" stories such an encounter yields.

Just Wondering if Maybe I'm Going Crazy or Just Really in Love with The sounds Of IWDEE and BG2EE . More so IWDEE love the music especially in Kuldahar , Don't know why I never really noticed it before when I played through these games When they first came out in early 2000's . Even the Ambient sounds of the woods with Birds ect.... Really love the Infinity Engine!!!! wish I knew how to create a New Maps and Dungeons for The engine.... Is there a Program like the Aurora toolset to create for the infinity engine???

Here's a list of all the problems I found since 2 years ago.

Hello, since 2.5 is around the corner, i thought i should do this post i've been thinking to post for a long time.

I've been modding for myself for quite some time now and while i was looking and messing with the game ressource i have found some bugs, (probably) unintended behavior and remark that i want to brought to attention:

All of the things mentioned below where found on the unmodded latest version of BGEE + SOD and a mostly only self-modded BG2EE.

- If a spell or item use opcode 318 or 324 to make creature with 100% resistance be immune to a spell, creature with -100% in the resistance will be immune too.

- scrolls have inconsistent casting spells level, most spells are cast at the 10th level but most (the older) spells of level 3 and lower are cast at the 6th level, most level 4 spells are cast at the 7th level and most level 5 spells are cast at the 9th level

- Some scroll have differents target than the spell they cast, here is what i found:
-wraithform (SCRL1R) target creature instead of self
-hold monster (SCRL5O) target area instead of creature and have a range of 45 instead of 40
-teleport field (SCRL6F) target creature instead of area
-oracle (SCRL6W) target area instead of self
- ? identify (SCRL75) target ground item instead of portrait
-contingency and chain contingency (SCRL7U,SCRL9Q) target self instead of "self instant"

- Some scrolls also have a wrong range, some even have a huge range while targeting self, like stoneskin (SCRL1V).

- A comparison of the PHB's wisdom table and MXSPLWIS.2DA has shown that the spells gained from innaturally high wisdom (19+) were wrong:
for 25 wisdom MXSPLWIS.2DA give the following spells : 3 3 2 4 4 3 1
while the PHB's wisdom table give : 4 3 3 3 3 3 1
(first row is first level spells gained, second is second level spells...)

- The same go for the BEND_BARS_LIFT_GATES column of the STRMOD.2DA, which for 25 strength would give a score of 80% to break lock and bash door against 99% in the PHB's strength table, and the WEIGHT_ALLOWANCE column, which give 200lbs of weight allowed for 18 in strength while the PHB's strength table give 110lbs (even if in this case, i would prefer keeping the increased weight allowance)

- The module Faith & Avatar have expended spells tables for levels beyond 20, which are extremely different from the ones in Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale (bards get 7th level spells, wizard have 7 spells of all spell levels at level 31...)

- The module Faith & Avatar also have expended THAC0 tables for levels beyond 20, unlike Baldur's Gate, where THAC0 cap at 20.
It mostly grow the same than before level 20 (warrior gain +1 each level, thief +1 each two levels, cleric +2 each three levels a nd wizard +1 each three levels) but warrior cap at -10 at 31 while other still increase

- Some spells, like unholy blight and call lightning, doesn't scale up to level 20, unholy blight stop growing at the 19th level and call lightning at the 18th level.

- In PNP, spells does not deal fire or cold damage but magical cold and magical fire damage, which can be relevant as spell protect less against magical cold/fire damage and some monsters (like the efreets or the greater mummies) have differents resistances between cold/fire and magical cold/fire. Since the magical fire and magical cold damage are already in the engine, why not include them ?

- As mentionned in the table 48 of the DMG, monsters gain magical bonus (+1,+2,...) depending of their hit dice to determine what they can hit. This is not the case in the BGs and IWD where some high level monster (like the summoned efreet) hit with no magical enchantment. While all monsters don't have to have the right magical bonus, summons need their magical bonus to be useful in late game.

- Since golems are mindless construct they should not be able to be stunned, confused and the like, but they rely on their immunity to spells and magical resistance to assume their role, which mean some items (like Celestial Fury or stun dart) can still affect them.

And sorry for my bad english.

Which class combo would you choose for a two-member party?

$

( Note: This poll is with reference to the IE games, namely the BG saga and IWD.)

It's very evident that the most "basic" classes are the Fighter, the Mage, the Cleric (or Druid, as you like), and the Thief. Of course, it is possible to do a play-through without any one or two (or even three or all four) of these classes. However, I plan to do a two-member party play-through (in both the BG saga and IWD) and wanted to incorporate all of these four classes within two multi-classed (or dual-classed) characters. That's really interesting, but, there are several possible combinations, each with their pros and cons. Which combo do you think is the most optimum and powerful, and why?

(If you prefer a combo different from the options given, please state it.)

Half-Elven Ranger/Cleric or Dwarven Fighter/Cleric?

The R/C has stealth option (without heavy armour) and free points in Two weapon style, while the Dwarven F/C has better Constitution and super high saves. These are the most obvious differences I can notice at the moment. Which one would you choose?

(And yes, by R/C, I mean the FIXED one, that is, the one which has access to druid spells only upto level 3.)

I think a Dwarven R/C, if it were possible, would have been the best.

Regarding Bhaal...

Dear BG and FR enthusiasts,

Are there any Forgotten Realms novels that explore Bhaal more in depth? I've just finished the Avatar Series and Bhaal was only briefly mentioned and glossed over. I would like to find out more in Bhaal as a god or perhaps as a mortal before he attained Godhood.

Also, how did Bhaal foresee his own death? Was it stated anywhere how he had known about Alaundo's prophecy?

Thank you.

How to get the original games after purchasing the Enhanced Editions on GOG

  1. Have or purchase any of the Enhanced Editions by Beamdog on GOG
  2. Select game in GOG account library (not in GOG Galaxy)
  3. Select "more" -> "serial keys"
  4. On the serial key page, use the link provided to redeem a free copy of the original game
And just in case anyone is confused by the wording of the serial to redeem being named as Enhanced Edition:
Hello, these keys are for the classic editions, they are just named in a bit of a misleading way, as they are bonuses FOR these games - if you enter these pages and click "continue", you can look up the contents of the code before finally redeeming it - or not.

The topic has come up recently, and a couple times in the past, regarding the availability of the original games on GOG.
I can't find the original games for download at Steam, GOG, or Gamersgate, however Amazon has the (4) originals for about $10
The reason why they can no longer be found is due to them being merged; while not exactly the same, it's similar, as mentioned before, to the 'Remastered' editions of the Broken Sword games. When you purchase a copy of the Enhanced Edition for Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, or Icewind Dale, there will be a message under the product information in your library.

Copies purchased prior to the merge will still be listed in your library. Whether you purchased a copy of the Enhanced Edition before or after the merge, you will be eligible to get a free copy of the original along with the Enhanced Edition. If you select an Enhanced Edition in your games library, you'll see the following message (the example is Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, but applies also to Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition and Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition).

Note the message at the bottom:
Message from GOG.com

Baldur's Gate Classic Edition gift code in now available in the "more" -> "serial keys" section.
Following the instructions here will provide a link to redeem the original, 'classic', version of the game.

Effective leveling strategy for the party, my way.

$

some considerations before we start.

-even if i like to play with 3 or 4 people parties, i find it the sweet spot between soloing and full party, 3 is my perfect number as i like to micromanage, i recognize that the initial advantage of leveling faster in end game is lost, as in end game even in a 6 people party they are well developed and the number makes the difference.
-full parties level up very slow and some well known tactics, like learning and erasing scrolls, if are effective for dualing minimizing the dual time, are not effective for boosting the level of a large party, there are not enough scrolls. other sources of free experience, like abusing of exploits or turning to stone and back to flash foe to get multiple times the xp will not be considered in this topic, i am talking here only of making the best use of the xp normally available in the games, as i play bg2 in that game, but for the others it works somehow the same.
-not all the classes need the same amount of xp to be effective, multi are the ones that need it more, some other class will benefit of fast leveling, like cleric to make explode undeads or sorcerer to be able to cast high level spells when a regular mage don't have even access to the scrolls to learn them. plain fighter types imo need it less and duals, if done at the right level, tipically 7 or 9 in bg2 either.
-xp comes in 2 ways, for the kills, and less people is in the party the more each one gain from it, and for the quests, and here the more the better.

putting together those considerations the logic powergaming choice of a strategy imo is obvious, but as i did not read of it anywere, probably is not so.
the goals are
1- to maximize the number of people in the party when quest rewards are given
2- to make it the smallest possible when the xp from the kills has to be shared, having in the party the characters that need more xp to be well developed
3- to play the first part of the game with few people in the party, better alone, to speed up the leveling of charname, until he reaches the ideal level that allows to recruit npcs at their maximum possible level. this is not relevant for custom parties but makes an huge difference playing with npcs.

so the most effective way is to have a carname that needs experience, sorcerer or multi, also 3 classes type.
tell imoen to find her way out of chateau irenicus alone and solo the full dungeon, never going near minsk and jaheira to avoid triggering their dialogue. when the dungeon is cleared and charname is ready to go out of it he finds M and J, frees them from the cages so everybody can exit and gain the quest xp.
then he can drop them or keep them depending on his needs. jaheira can be dropped only once but being multi is one that benefits of getting more xp then others. same aerie if you romance her, but the romances with single classes and anomen should be avoided from this PG perspective.

then charname continues alone or maybe with an helper until the ideal level that allows to recruit at the maximum possible level is reached. at this point he recruits a full party.
from that moment to the end he drops and recruits them multiple times to have few of them sharing the kill xp and the whole party as some quest reward is given. this can be done in sinergy with the game, in a quest where many undeads are found, or even in a single phase of a quest, like a certain room in firkraag dungeon, he can have a cleric to turn and use negative plane protection, and so on. more helpers can be recruited for the boss battles if needed, while the other battles in between are less challenging so only the few that need more xp can be present. this mean for some quests and for the whole asylum-underdark to recruit everyone to go to the next area or get a quest reward and drop them as they are not needed. for other quests you can leave some party members at copper coronet or wherever you like them and optionally delay quest rewards just as you do for fast dualing.

as the xp for the quests is a good percentage of the total xp in the end even those that have participated less to the battles in the end will have some levels, while who needs more xp will grow at a the same rate of a 3 people party being in a 6 people one.
to be more precise we need to know the exact composition of a party, but as you get the principles you can easily adapt them to the particular situation.

let's make an example
1 charname fmt
2 aerie (charname' romance)
3 keldorn
4 mazzi
5 haer dalis
6 neera
1 and 2 are always present and as multi they gain from it, charname cause has 3 classes to rise, the whiny one cause the earlier she can mix arcane and divine in triggers and CC the better it is. she is also the divine caster so to have her growing at the rate of a 3 people party make her turn undeads effectively and all the rest.
3 and 4 are fighters and somehow are interchangeable, you can take the pally when mage fights are there and mazzi when a good ranged fighter is useful, for some quests you can go without them as a fmt and to some extent aerie can hold the front line, even more being overleveled for the phase of the game. the blade if present in that situations help them.
5 it depends on the use you want from him, you can focus more on him and have him more present or regard him as the 6th of the group and give him little more than the quests xp (minsk, anomen and vaigar can cover the same role) and in tob maybe will be dropped to make place to sarewok.
6 is the main caster and as a wild mage needs some caution, as the more she levels the more she is able to cast without the risk of a sourge, probably she needs to level up faster in the beginning but as she begins to be very strong each level more is less game changing, let's say from the moment she has a couple of lev 9 spells. at that point you can have her less frequently in the party, as 1, 2 and 5 if present cover the arcane casting quite well.
in the end you have charname leveling at 2/3 of a single class and aerie at the rate of a single class, neera leveling slower than a single class but fast until she reaches a good level of power, a couple of fully operational fighter types (after a certain number of levels they reach the better thaco that is what really matters in that party that have plenty of arcane and divine power to substitute GWW with IH and gate better helpers than keldorn's deva. and haer dalis as 6th with a level enough high to be useful at almost 0 cost or a better level without nerfing too much the growth of the others as you prefer.

i know that the party of my example is not a perfect PG party, and i have chosen it so on purpose, the system works with every party. with a custom PG party works even better.
you will have a fmt and a cm that grow really fast so they reach good power level much earlier than having always 6 people in the party, a main caster that reaches good levels quite fast (don't forget that with the initial strategy every npc is recruited early, but at a relatively high level, and this more than compensates the fact that later she looses some of the kills xp). and you have 2 fully operational fighters, maybe under leveled than keeping them all the time in the party, but everybody benefit from the recruiting boost, and an other helper that can be useful as can tank, can help casting and somehow can also fight effectively. the overall efficiency in each phase of the game is superior to the one having everybody always present in the party and sharing all the kills xp.
you will level slower than in a 3 people party but for every difficult battle and in end game for all the battles you will have 6 peoples ready, so much more apr, 5 casters, the main one potentially the best caster of the game as she begins to use dwehomers (that casted from a clone imho are much less riskier as some bad happenings happen to the PI) and 5 able to be in the front line (or be a ranged hurricane in the case of mazzi) and be effective there. don't forget that haer dalis can tank like the betters while equipped with 2 +1apr weapons and aerie and her simulacrum shapeshifted into golem, werewolf or mind flyer, with clerical buffs on top can be more deadly than most of the fighters. she will be ready for that and for the other high level cm combos fast as a single class grows normally, not only for the few final battles of tob.
it is not like having a 6 people party leveling at the rate of a 3 people one, that would be impossible, but it gets really close.

suggestions and comments are welcome. and i hope that it is useful as i never read something similar so i doubt that other people than me uses a similar leveling strategy.
comments from a PG perspective, please, as i know that rp wise the whole thing stinks bad but this is a PG topic...

Winter Wizard Builds - Can it be done in BG or NWN?

$

Hi, I'm not sure where to post this, so I'm trying BG General. Moderators, feel free to move it wherever.

I've been trying and enjoying a "Winter Wizard" caster build in Path of Exile, and very much enjoying it, and I've also tried the same in Titan Quest using storm mastery, although I thought it didn't work out that well there once the character got to Hades. So far, it's doing quite well in Path of Exile, which has more cold based skills than I've ever seen before.

I'm thinking I'd enjoy making this character idea kind of a "signature character class", but I'm not seeing how it can be done in any shape, form, or fashion in BG.

In NWN, one could theoretically build a mage or sorcerer around casting Ice Storm and taking all the associated metamagic feats to make it stronger. But, the spell is *extremely* companion unfriendly. And I can't think of a single other ice or cold based spell.

In BG, are there any cold based spells at all? And ironically, in IWD, can you try to be a cold specialist mage of any kind?

What would be involved in adding more cold based spells, skills, or builds of any kind to the Infinity Engine games?

The only even remotely related thing I can think of is the Wand of Frost, and I don't see how you could base a whole character idea on using those, especially since they're very rare to find. You'd have to keep using the vendor sell and rebuy trick to keep the thing charged through your whole run.

EDIT: I just thought of Cone of Cold. Again, highly party unfriendly. Does this idea just work the best with solo RPG? Has anyone here ever done a BG run based on using Wand of Frost and casting Cone of Cold as main attacks? How did it work out? Was it in a party, or solo?

Dark Sun games remade in the Infinity engine

Not sure if this is the right place on the forum, but I would definitely be keen for a remake of Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager and Dark Sun: Shattered Lands in the infinity engine. Or a similar game if a remake wasn't possible due to technical issues (no source code etc).

Would others be interested in this? Is this even possible for Beamdog to do (from a legal/IP perspective)? Would a kickstarter be possible?
