[not a feature request] Missing multi-class merriment

This is an I wish... post, rather than a request - the limitations of the game engine (and established gaming environment) are what they are.

With the advent of the Shaman class in 2.0, I started thinking about missed multi class opportunities again.

One obvious mechanical synergy would be a shaman/sorceror. Both have limited spell-lists, but no need to memorize, being 'natural' casters. Thematically I'm not sure how well they play together - my image of the Shaman is about as far away from an arcane caster as I could image.

Option 2 is a much more thematic match, I would love to play a barbarian/shaman, either dual-classing or as a half-orc. That said, the is also a hard sell for the ward of Gorion, brought up in Candlekeep.

A shaman/bard really has the theme of a culture preserving an oral tradition, and could be particularly interesting to play. This plays more to the notion of bard as a skald, even without taking the kit.

Oddly enough, all three combinations are doubly-illegal, which only makes me want them more ;)

Anyone else have interesting multi/dual class characters that they wish the game could allow?

Why are there Mage sprites and paperdolls for Dwarves and Half Orcs?

While playing with my character's appearance using the CTRL+6 and CTRL+7 console commands, I noticed that there are apparently fully functional sprites and paperdolls that the console calls "MAGE MALE DWARF," "MAGE FEMALE DWARF," "MAGE MALE HALF ORC," and "MAGE FEMALE HALF ORC."

Dwarf Mage:

Half Orc Mage:

Why do these exist if neither Dwarves nor Half Orcs can be any kind of Mage? Are these used for NPCs? Are they a holdover from some unfinished plan to expand these races' class options? Perhaps they were intended for unfinished companions that would've had "illegal" race/class combos? Maybe the explanation is simple and I'm not seeing it for some reason. For the record, Halflings don't have any corresponding Mage sprites/paperdolls.

The sprites appear to be identical to the Gnome Mage (for the Dwarves) and Human Mage (for the Half-Orc), but the paperdolls seem to be unique. (Part of me seems to remember the male Dwarf Mage paperdoll was how the male Gnome Mage paperdoll looked in the original "unenhanced" Baldur's Gate, but my memory is fuzzy.) Here are some comparison shots just to showcase Half Orc vs. Human and Dwarf vs. Gnome, since the differences are somewhat subtle:

Will we ever see "Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition"?

The age of Boo

Come to think of it, has anyone else thought about that cricetinae's accurate age throughout the Baldur's Gate saga?

A hamster's lifespan usually ranges between two to three years in captivity, depending on the breed. And in the case of the Campbell's and the Djungarian hamster, it's even up to whopping four years sometimes.

Judging from Minsc's portraits and its depictions of Boo, I'm inclined to believe that this rodent is at least partly a golden short haired Syrian hamster. Which means max. three years before he gets to see the Beastlands. (Especially since giant miniature hamster are nothing but ordinary hamsters to begin with!)

Now, the tricky part would be to fit that lifespan into the saga. If I remember correctly the journey from Candlekeep to godhood would be about two years, give or take some months.

Funnily enough, the size of Boo within both Minsc's BG and BG2 portraits stays about the same. Which would mean that Boo already reached adulthood before we even meet them in Beregost. And yet Minsc always on about how his hamster is too young to avenge him.

A clear contradiction in biological matters!
ARGH, IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY

Cleric/Necromancer - Project Image as innate (once per day) = OP?

I am creating a human multiclass using EEkeeper. I figure since my guy is a bhaalspawn, he's special. Since this trilogy run is all about teh roleplay, I figured an evil Cleric/Necromancer would be hawt. But here is my problem:

If I go Talos Priest/Mage, I still get the extra mage spell slot. EEkeeper works a funny way in that if the Cleric is a kit, the Mage is treated as a specialist mage without restrictions. So by going Cleric/Necromancer, I am actually losing the Talos Priest abilities AND the ability to cast from the illusionist school.

So I am looking for a way to make up for this without going overboard (I don't consider a specialist mage and cleric multi overboard because it's allowed in PnP as well Gnomes are allowed to do it).

I was thinking a single casting of Project Image a day would even things out. It also works well with Necromancer seeing as how I am giving up Illusion magic. Is this OP? Cleric/Necro multiclass w/ PI once per day?

Personally, just cause I'm using EEkeeper don't mean I want to be unfair here. If PI as inate once per day is overdoing it, I will figure something else out.

What say you?

How do I enter that damn castle in Ice Wind Dale expansion?

This post contains spoilers.

I talked to the guy in the tavern and he warps me to a new place, I've:

- Completed the top floor of all 4 towers
- Completed the bottom floor of all 4 towers
- Obtained all of the items mentioned in the scrolls

I still can't enter the main castle though! What am I missing?

As I learn more from this forum, I realize how much about the game I didn't know about. There were items, strategies and spells that could have made my life a lot easier against various monsters. There were dialogue options I had never been given. Easter Eggs I never knew about. Etc, etc.

I was interested in seeing this kind of topic ever since my boy @Quartz‌ said that he never made Crom Faeyr. So I made this thread for us all to confess our Baldur's Gate sins. Come and admit that you never completed your stronghold, you've never even heard of Kangaxx, never killed Firkraag or are still dying to know where Hull misplaced his longsword.

I'll begin:

Confession: I have never done the Viconia romance.

Confession: I have never played a thief character.

Has there been any discussions to bring these games to the consoles? PS4 specifically? I imagine that it is do-able since Divinity are on consoles. I would like to have add this game to my trophy collection! Thanks!

Care and Feeding of Wild Mage

I recently took Neera on as a serious addition to my party. I thought these wild card level 1 spells could be exceptionally awesome. Potentially. The problem is, even with a chaos shield the bad always seems to outweigh the good; from destroying a significant portion of my gold, to firebombing my party, to summoning a demon. On the plus side, sometimes her spells do what is intended.

I really like the concept of a wild mage, but at the early levels at least, it just seems like such a liability. So does anybody have any advice on how they are best used?

Ideas on how to make the most of the time until SoD?

If only these last nine days would hurry up and pass already! I can't believe after all this time we are about to have a NEW BALDUR'S GATE ADVENTURE. This is a big deal. Part of me wants to wait and not continue with my current trilogy run and another part wants me to go ahead and run the trilogy one more time (which I can do in a week's time with ease).

What are you going to do to make the most of the time while we wait?

Which version of the text editor would you prefer for the forums?

In the last day or two we've been testing out some alternative formatting settings for the forums. Previously, the forums have used HTML for all posts, with spoiler buttons being handled with BBCode.

We have the option to make everything use BBCode, which would make the formatting options more intuitive for the majority of users, but might take away some of the more advanced HTML styling that advanced users might like playing with.

We also have the option (which is in use now) to use a WYSIWYG editor, which includes the option to view and edit the raw HTML of your post. But the HTML view for the WYSIWYG editor is raw HTML, not the lightly formatted HTML we have in the HTML format.

All three of these options support keyboard shortcuts for Bold, Italic, and Underline. The question is, which do you prefer?

This is an all-or-nothing proposition. Vanilla doesn't currently give us the choice to switch on a post-to-post basis (although any existing posts will continue to use the format they were created in). So take some time to play with the WYSIWYG editor, and think about which of the following three options you'd most prefer. I'll let this simmer for about a week, and then we'll make a decision based on the voting results and the discussions that follow.

The most ridiculous stats you have rolled for a Baldur's Gate character?

$

I remember my first full play through of Baldurs's Gate after three attempts I rolled some amazing stats for a Paladin. Which is easier to do on a Paladin because you always get the class requirement minimum ie you will have a min Charisma 17, but despite that I managed:

Strength: 18/00
Dexterity: 18
Constitution: 18
Intelligence: 11
Wisdom: 16
Charisma: 18

Which in turn meant that thanks to all the stat boosting tomes I imported into BGII looking like this:

Strength: 19
Dexterity: 19
Constitution: 19
Intelligence: 12
Wisdom: 18 (There were two wisdom boosting tomes if you know where to look!)
Charisma: 19

Question is what are the best stats you've managed to roll, and how long did it take you? I'd also be curious to know what are the crappiest stats anyone has managed to finish the game on?

Highest legit stats rolled

The best roll I ever got was a Ranger what netted me 96 pts.

However I was desperate to dual class a fighter to druid and kept at it until I had:

str: 18/00 (I would have taken anything)
dex 18
con 18
int 3
wis 18
chr 18

which is only 93 pts but for a human that is exceptional. I have found that Rangers, particularly half elf rangers get the best rolls but has anyone ever gotten a truly amazing roll. What was it?

This is how we roll.

I was sitting around, pregenerating characters for future runs through BG and IWD (doesn't everyone?), when I realized I'd fallen out of love with min-maxing. So I fiddled around a bit and I came up with a method that produces the characters I want to play.

That's got me wondering about how others roll up their characters. Do you reroll until you get above a certain number? Do you accept the first one out of the gate? Do you set limits on min-maxing?

How do you roll up a character, and why do you do it that way?

Here's what I came up with:

Goal-
I want characters like I used to play in PnP. Exceptional people, but not over the top.

Method-
1. Choose gender, race and class. Note the racial attribute adjustments for the ones I don't already have memorized.
2. Roll until I get a total 80 or over. This is the baseline.
3. Store it and note the individual rolls.
4. I now have 10 rolls to get something better. When I do get something better, I store it and then I have another 10 rolls to beat it. Beating a previous roll doesn't always mean a higher total because...
5. No min-maxing of individual points. I can swap attribute rolls (taking racial adjustments into account), but I can't take points from one attribute and add them to another. If I don't roll an 18, I don't get an 18.
6. Continue the rest of creation as normal.

Results-
Of the 10 characters I've created with this method so far, 2 of them have an 18 and 2 of them top out at 16. Six of them have one or two 17's, though on a couple of them, I took lower overall totals, because I intend to dual-class.

Besides having to be careful about the dual-class, I also noticed that sometimes I can't make swaps on classes like Ranger that have multiple minimum scores. I wanted to swap a high wisdom for a low charisma on an Archer, and I couldn't because of the minimum Wis requirement.

So, am I crazy for putting this much thought into a bunch of numbers, or is this tame compared to what some others are doing?

What's your best stats roll?

I just started vanilla BG2, and wanted to make a character. I tend to play with the first 80+ roll for my PC. But this one I got upon the very first roll (after stats re-assignment).

STR 18/99
DEX 17
CON 19
INT 14
WIS 10
CHA14

Total 92 with a 18/99. Jesus.

HTML or BBCode: Which should we use?

$

Due to a change in the way Vanilla handles things, we've been forced to make a decision between HTML and BBCode.

HTML has the advantage of allowing you to do just about anything you could do with a website. It's primarily useful for advanced users.

BBCode is a more standardized message board formatting system; it's designed to be author- and reader-friendly, but that also means it's more limited in the types of things it allows you to do.

I'm going to let this simmer for about a week, and then we'll make a decision based on the results of this poll and the discussions that follow.

Right now we're using BBCode because that was the most popular in our previous poll, but nothing has been finalized yet. Try out BBCode, see if you like it, and then vote below. No matter what we use, the formatting bar that you see at the top of the reply box will be staying where it is.

Can someone explain to me the difference between potion of magic protection and magic shielding?

And which do you use/prefer when fighting magic-users?

Thanks.
