Boxed-product wise, I don't see retail working well. I see the demand as not uniform and hard to meet with a blanket retail approach.

Come suggest some theme songs for each NPC!

For the music lovers out there!
What songs do you guys think would be fitting for each NPC? Share a tune that fits their character, their story or their attitude.

All suggestions welcome!

I'll begin with some:

Due t his marriage difficulties and his wife's name, I'll give Keldorn "Maria, Maria" by Santana. The pain in his voice when he says "Maria!" after his wife says "What if I don't love you anymore?" is just heartbreaking. Also, Manowar's "Heart of Steel" just describes his attitude toward evil perfectly for me

Dorn must have some kind of song about being badass and evil. The songs "Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood would fit, but I'm a big metal fan, so I'll give him Iced Earth's "Pure Evil"
image
image

Eldoth just has to be an outlaw country song, so I either have to go with "Didn't Your Mama Tell ya 'bout Boys Like Me" by Montgomery Gentry or for a better song, Iron Maiden's "Running Free"
image

Skie would definitely be the Upper Middle Class spoiled girl who totally thinks she's cool for listening to rrap, so I'd have to give her some Kanye (the go-to artist for these people). She's also the totally non-metal sorority girl who constantly misuses Dio's horn sign while listening to Blink 182

For Yoshimo you gotta go with image

To chime in with @booinyoureyes - which NPC does get the most undeserved hate? Which "black sheep" do you find well written, mechanically useful or even both?

The Tale of the Totemic Druid

$

Inspired by this tread and thanks to @bbear here I’m going to tell a story about Karasu no Yoru, a totemic druid raised in the Candlekeep and destined to become a major figure in the history of the Sword Coast.

The name of the character is in Japanese and means his name actually is Yoru (night) and he comes from the Karasu (crow) clan known for shamans and spirits.

Here's the character sheet at the start of the game.
image
The main incentive is to find out what it takes to successfully solo the whole game (from the start of BG:EE to the end of BG2:EE) with the totemic druid. There’s a discussion about which class is the hardest for a solo run in that thread and it seems many people vote for a druid. So I’ve decided to test it and will gladly write about it for those who are interested in the concept.

I’m playing on the Core difficulty and here’s my weiDU log:

I consider myself an experienced player, had different playthroughs in the past but have never tried the totemic druid. This kit seems interesting to me because it shows the true, from my point of view, nature of a druid – a summoner. In the past I played as an Avenger and liked it much but the Avenger feels more like a druid/mage, while a Shapeshifter obviously feels more like a fighter/druid. A vanilla druid is fine as well but I just like using a kit and not a vanilla version (if it’s not a dual- or multi-class). So, the totemic druid it is.

I understand the problems that can arise because of the SCS but I hope that my knowledge of the game will help to overcome these difficulties. I seriously think that with some meta-gaming even the power of SCS can be not so dangerous. I think than so bad (yeah) thing as the meta-gaming needs serious countermeasures such as not OP class, not min-maxed stats, smarter AI and so on.

As a rule, I try to role-play my character and his party as much as I can but this time it will be different. And I’m so excited – it’s a challenge, and a good one. I’ll try to play a no-reload run with an option for minimal reloads if the character will be killed but I will feel myself attached to it. Also, your reactions, ideas and just a general discussion is much appreciated ;)))

Stats that you never like dumping...

I was curious if anybody else refrained from dumping Stats that weren't needed for their MainChar's build?

Speaking for myself, I just can't dump intelligence or charisma. I reason that my MainChar is the party leader so he better have some decent wits and a head for tactics, also he is the leader, and I figure a good Charisma score will reflect this.

I'll run with low strength, constitution, wisdom and even dexterity, just to ensure my PC has a decent INT and CHA.

Does anybody always go the tough guy route? (Constitution)

Does anybody always go Strength, so their PC can always have a 19 STR after tomes?

Does anybody like a good Wisdom, for common sense in their MainChar?

Does anyone favor quick and agile characters? (Dexterity)

Or do you always favor a good combination?

Have you noticed a pattern regardless of class, across your character builds?

*I think I'm interested in what you find yourself consistently playing, especially if for example you like warrior types and always have a high strength, even if you're playing a mage etc...

How should intelligence affect arcane spellcasting in your opinion?

Let me preface a poll with a quotation from the Player Handbook:

Spell Level
lists the highest level of spells that can be cast by a wizard with this
Intelligence.

Note that it specifies cast instead of scribed. This means that the current implementation (intelligence required to scribe) is not more faithful to P&P than the old implementation (no intelligence requirement for specific spell levels).
I strongly feel that the current implementation is half-baked. As it stands, the requirement is only a minor annoyance; it sucks if you find a cool new level 9 spell scroll at level 18 and do not have a potion of genius with you.

Since they are easy to find and cheap to purchase, the requirement does not add anything meaningful to the game. It only serves as a "gotcha" for people not familiar with the rule and ways of how to temporarily increase your intelligence. The implementation is also inconsistent as it does not affect High Level Abilities (level 10 spells).

That is why I would like to the game either to revert this change or extend it to casting spells like in P&P. Personally I would prefer a revert, since otherwise the most powerful arcane caster (Edwin) become relatively even more powerful. I could still life with the P&P option, as this would make the restriction meaningful instead of an annoyance.

As a closing note, there was a broken implementation of the rule in the original BG 2. That is why for example @Dee sees this as a bugfix instead of a change. Personally, I wonder if it was left broken on purpose. Maybe the devs back then decided that implementing it would not improve the game? After all it did not even matter for BG 2 pre ToB, since you just need 16 int for level 8 spells (maximum at that time).

Turn based versions

I have three
basic things I need to know:
1. Are any of the various games by BEAMDOG avaliable in turn based mode only?

2. Perhaps someone can explain something that happened to me way back when BG was released for computer and steam was just a small time outlet. I bought the disk version back then and installed it and spent the better part of a day creatihg my 6 member party. I then headed out for the big adventure but only got part way when I met a NPC who informed me that they had to become part of my party in order to continue. None of the dialogue options allowed me to refuse this request and I did not know if I could add this NPC then kill her and get my character I created back. It just hit me wrong at the time and I just shut of the game deleted it and gave my copy to a friend..
Now over the years because of this I have not bought any of the games in this series and if I had known tat IWDEE was one I might not have bought it. I have received some responses to this question over the years and most have said that I must have been wrong or I did something that caused this like having only 5 in my party but L know there were 6 and I had to remove one to continue on. If someone can shed some light on this it would be
awesome.

ALSO: Will it ever be possible top have a BEAMDOG game that can be played in both real tim/pause and true turn
based modes?

I just want to say.....

thanks to those who respondeed with friendship. I think I got off on the wrong foot with my first few posts and I plan on being a little more"human". I read a post on another community board for a different game that was a realtime/pause type. The poster was complaining about the combat system and before I read the responders I was thinking "Hay that guy sounds like me" and then the respondents were trying to explain the real time/pause combat system.
There were some heated words and I have come to the conclusion that both sides had some good points
(call them turn based VS real time/pause) but niether side seemed to let the other have its due credit. Over the last few years I have watched the realtime/pause games get more popilar. I have to admit that both sides have some good points and I think that the younger players (15-25 yrs of age) have the largest say because it is thi age group that buys most of the computer games.
Then I saw the introduction of older turn based game getting in on the new RT/P (realtime with pause) band wagon and things have not changed at lleast for me. I still think that turn based RPG games are the better way to go. My reasoning may be a bit biased but:
1. most of the pencil and paper D&D games before computers were run by a dungeon master who controlled
most of the activity of the players. when Wizardry came along things got better for the most part. I can't help to feel this was/is a better way. It is what I grew up with.
2. I have only one RT/P game (Commanding General: Gettysburg) which I play on a regular basis.
3. I am not saying TB(turn based is better than RT/P or the new TB/P games like most of the EE games in this series
are better. I am saying it is what you grewup using. Wherever the games are 50 yyears from now are it will make the games now look primitive,
4. unlike many who state flatly "TB games are slow and booring" are right in the sense that they are compared to the games I played 50 years ago just as the games now will be in 50 years when compared to the games we play now.

I really want to at least get comfortable with RT/P & TB/P but it is a strugle because after several hours of playing these type of games I just get so frustrated I have to quit for awhile. When that happens I play some of the Koei
games like "Romance of the three Kingdoms XI" and soon to play Nobonoga's Ambition" .
The first one ROTK XI was published about 2006 But further versions were witheld from the USA market in disk format for some reason. I was able to get a copy frrom a frien in Englan who was on a online group I was a member. I also play "Divinity II Dev. Cut" which I love. I have to admit I have yet to win the final battle even with God Mode but that is because It is hard for me use a KB &M in that game.
Well I have taken up to much of your time but feel free to contact me for what ever reason

9 familiars?

$

I had a pretty cool idea for a build, someone who is 'nonopolar', that is, has 9 distinct personalities, which happen to match the 9 possible alignments in BG, ranging from lawful good to chaotic evil.

Obviously this person starts life as a berzerker, however after some landmark insight (possibly as a result of being tortured by a hugely powerful mage?), they choose to train as a mage themselves. Revenge, and lust for power (and revenge) features strongly here. Revenge is also something of a priority. Possibly also retribution. Also the neutralising of a great evil for the public good. With extra Payback. Also revenge.

Anyway, I rolled up a zerker, using the Valen image, following the pale skin and black hair, then hit on the perfect name - Polar. This ties in with her favorite damage type, which is cold. (Can't waste time looting if there's no loot).

This brings us to another wrinkle, which is that I want to limit inventory, so each familiar has a reserved position in her pack. Also, no containers allowed at all. It goes without saying no familiar pickpocketing exploits to carry stuff.

I was lazy on stats, 21 INT, 18:50 STR, 15 DEX, 12 CON, 9 WIS, 6 CHA.

Finally, the familiars. I summoned the first, saved, and looked at the save in shadowkeeper. Only thing I could see was a global variable TUTFAM01 = 1. No affects, no states. I edited this to xTxUxTxFxAxMx0x1x, and changed the alignment, but still can't summon a second familiar. Thoughts?

Is there a way mage doesn't need to do mental battle when summoning (lesser)elemental?
Does mental battle depend on intelligence ?
There is a 15% chance that the lesser elemental will win and attack the caster.

When conjuring Fire Elemental why priests don't have to go through mental battle to dominate elementals like mages. What is the lore behind this?

Hello all! Yesterday, Sid told me that she wanted to play Baldur's Gate. At last! I shall play the role of silent observer. She shall play that of Clara, a half-elven Fighter/Mage/Thief. She decided to take her very first roll: Str 11, Dex 15, Con 14, Int 14 15, Wis 10 11, Cha 14

More to follow.

Weapon Speed Factor?

$
0
0
Solely Based On Proven Source Book Rulings From Advanced Dungeons And Dragons 2nd Edition: Which Quotation Below Is / Are Correct, And Which Is / Are Wrong?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"As you all know a round takes 6 seconds (ok, you all didn't know...). A speed factor of 4 means it takes you 4/10 of a round to strike, so you can make 2,5 strikes a round. This speedfactor can be raised by magical means (haste), weapons (bows are usually faster as 2-handed swords), and of course profincy, as the matter of fact, by going from master to grand master this is the only improvement."
"Here go, reading from the second edition's player's handbook (black and red edition), page 127, under the title 'weapon speed and intiiative (optional rule)'
each time a character swings a weapon, he places himself out of position to make his next attack. swinging a hammer is not as simple as tapping in a nail. A war hammer is heavy. Swing it in one direction and it pulls in that direction. It has to be brought under control and repositioned before it can be swung again. The user must regain his balance and plant his feet firmly. Only after doing all this work is he ready for his next attack.
Compare how quickly someone can throw a punch to the amount of time required to swing a chair to get a good idea of what weapon speed factors are about.
Weapon speed factors slow the speed of a character's attack. The higher the weapon speed, the heavier, clumsier, or more limited the weapon is. For the most part, weapon speed factors apply to all creatures using manufactured weapons. The speed factor of a weaspon is added to the intiative roll of the character to get his modified intiative roll.
there's another paragraph after all that, but it goes on to say how if the DM decides to use speed factors, he should use them for the monsters, as well as the PCs.
now, how this all equates in the much different format of baldur's gate, i'm not 100% sure, but that's the basis for speed factors in pen and paper, so i imagine it's real similar in the game."
Source Link: http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/327/t289536-speed-factor/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Speed Factor: Each type of weapon has a Speed Factor, which determines at what point in the round the attack will actually be made. A Speed Factor of 4 means that at the start of each round of combat, the character will wait for 4/10ths of the round to pass, and then attack. Cumbersome weapons such as Flails and Crossbows have the slowest Speed Factors, and small weapons like Daggers have the quickest. Note that the Speed Factor of your weapon does NOT affect how rapidly you can attack with it (that is determined solely by your Attacks per Round), it simply reflects how long it takes between the time you issue the Attack command, and when the attack is actually made. It is important largely only for characters attacking from Stealth, where a quicker Speed Factor can give you a second chance at a Backstab (before you become visible) if you missed the first time."

Let's have some conceptual fun!!

Let's have some conceptual fun fun and possibly annoy some fan boys while we are at it. So the idea is to take abilities, skills, items, or powers from one multiverse and give them to a character, race, or creature in DnD or BG. Then discuss whether they are over powered, underpowered, or no real change.

Got it, I'll start us off, time to start the hate...

Giving the thu'um to the dragons in DnD. If you look at the it from aaa lore and not gameplay perspective, I don't see any real limit it. It's a magic that materializes the very words being spoken.I still want to see what will happen if they shouted, "Die, All, Mortals"

Give the 12 talisman's of shendu to a male Drow, or a Dragonborn... Watch the fireworks go!

Give Drizzt either soul caliber or soul edge.

You may hate me now.
