Obe the Illusionists' Helper Party - Where's the exploit??

$

Help, folks!

I swear that no more than a week ago, on this site, I read a detailed description of an exploit to get the training party out of the storehouse without having to use export/import or an external tool or leaving the game.

Now I cannot find that thread after dozens of search term variations, and even a scan of every thread title that is grayed because I have viewed it recently.

The description involved clustering the NPCs near the player and Obe, then dismissing them all, and denying their requests to rejoin. Then, I THINK, you either triggered Obe's teleport, or waited for him to get tired of playing around so he would trigger it himself. Paused, bespoke one of the NPCs, then allowed the teleport to complete. that left you with a remaining party member inside, whom you could use to speak to/join up the others and lead them outside to rejoin the avatar. I THINK.

Can any of y'all point me to the original post of the technique, or a subsequent description of it? I'd like to mess around with these guys a bit.

My take on Rasaad's epilogue (non-canon) (Spoilers)

$

I wasn't particularly satisfied with Rasaad's fate in two out of three of his endings, as I felt that a man like him deserved at least a little more. I'm not one to believe that every character should have a happy ending, but his non-romanced path felt... unfinished, for lack of a better term. So I went and wrote my own version:

Rasaad Epilogue - Non-romanced
Though Alorgoth was not seen again for many years after the events in the Deepstone Mines, the Bringer of Doom was not killed there. By the time Alorgoth resurfaced, Rasaad's name had been almost forgotten by the world. After the events of the Bhaalspawn saga, Rasaad, hoping to reconcile with the brothers and sisters of his order, returned to Calimshan, hoping that the tales of his heroism would redeem him. However, he was unable to convince them to the truth of his 'betrayal' of their teachings, and gentle words soon became fierce combat. Rasaad battled against hundreds of his fellow Sun Soul monks, sustaining grievous injuries and forced to flee the temple. His wounds should have spelled his end that day, but whether by the grace of the Moonmaiden or his own force of will, Rasaad held onto what strands of life he had. Assumed dead by the order, Rasaad wandered the deserts as a nameless traveller for many years.

Inevitably, the return of Alorgoth would happen, and as though by premonition, Rasaad would be ready. On a moonless night, the Sharran order of the Dark Moon launched a devastating attack upon the main temple of the Sun Soul, overwhelming the monks with ease. The grandmistress of the order, Haraan Sixscar, faced Alorgoth personally before being stabbed in the back by the monk Gahan, an agent of the Dark Moon order who had decided Rasaad's guilt. When all seemed lost that night, Rasaad returned, fending off both the Dark Moon monks and his own brothers before meeting his nemesis face to face. The two monks, the strongest of their respective orders, struck simultaneously without a word. By the words of those who watched, the battle between light and dark would be one worthy of song for many years.

Despite his skill, Rasaad knew he could not slay Alorgoth, as the two were equal in combat and the Sharran was devious. In an act of desperation, Alorgoth attempted a last maneuver, summoning a portal for his escape into the Plane of Shadow once more. Rasaad, in one final effort to defeat his enemy, charged towards Alorgoth sending both monks plummeting once more into the Shadow Plane... forever this time.

The Sun Soul order had achieved victory that day, but neither Rasaad nor Alorgoth were ever seen again. However, though Rasaad was gone, his legacy would remain. Redeemed in the eyes of his brothers and sisters, a statue of Rasaad was raised in the rebuilt temple, the first monument of its kind ever to be made. It is said that in the brightest of days, the statue would glow as though with the light of the sun itself, and the monks of the temple would pray for Rasaad's final victory over Alorgoth and his return.
A bit too much like Keldorn's, I know, but that's why I left Rasaad's fate ambiguous for the possible hope that he will return victorious one day. Whether he does or not? Who can say :P

Now, his romanced ending was a different story. I actually like the direction it took, and I'm a sucker for tragic romances for sure, but having CHARNAME die was just awkward to read. A bit more grim than the above, but I like this one a little better.
Though Alorgoth was not seen for many years after the events int he Deepstone mines, the Bringer of Doom was not killed there. But by the time Alorgoth resurfaced, Rasaad's focus had moved from avenging his dead family members to caring for his new ones. Unable to convince the Sun Soul order of his dedication to them, he and CHARNAME went and made a home together in the Cloud Peak mountains. Their six children enjoyed an idyllic childhood, brought up according to the tenets of the Sun Soul philosophy. But the children were of the Bashir bloodline, and it was only a matter of time before the darkness that plagued their father found them as well.

One pleasant spring evening, Rasaad and CHARNAME were set upon by Sharran assassins. CHARNAME, at the time several months pregnant with her seventh child, was an easy target for them. Rasaad, knowing that his lover was in mortal danger, stood between his family and countless Dark Moon monks and assassins, a single man against insurmountable odds. Whether blessed by Selune or fueled by righteous fury that day, Rasaad fought with more strength than anyone had ever seen, narrowly evading blows that surely would have been fatal and defeating each and every foe who attempted to slay him.

Tirelessly, Rasaad fought off the attackers for what seemed to be countless hours, until finally, as the last of the Sharrans had either died or fled in terror, the injuries the monk sustained, coupled with exhaustion which would have destroyed a lesser man, dropped him to the ground. With the last of his strength, Rasaad lifted himself to face CHARNAME and whispered his last words into his wife's ear before passing away under a sky with a full moon and endless stars.

Soon afterwards, CHARNAME gave birth to her seventh child, a strong boy who resembled his father more than any of his siblings. In memory of her husband's past, CHARNAME named him Gamaz, Rasaad's brother who had lost his way and died by his hand many years ago. Gamaz would grow up to be the strongest of any of Rasaad's children, and as Rasaad did for his brother, swore an oath of revenge towards Alorgoth for the cruel fate that befell his father. Posessing the skills of both his Sun Soul father and his Bhaalspawn mother, Gamaz led his brothers and sisters on a crusade of vengeance and justice against the Dark Moon sect, an epic struggle which the Alorgoth would suffer his greatest defeats from.
I think this one is rather close to Viconia's romanced ending, but I hope it feels unique enough. I certainly would have preferred it end like this compared to vanilla.

Please do give your opinions. This was just my attempt at some writing for fun, seeing as I don't get much inspiration from other sources these days, so I write for video games instead. XD

Stuck on Bodhi Bug- Can't Progress in Game

Hello all,

I chose Bodhi as my assistance in reaching chapter 4, but during my first playthrough, I couldn't engage her in conversation after killing Aran. I attempted starting from all points at which I had a save file, but to the same end. After reading very few reports of the same problem and coming across no solutions, I decided I'd encountered a problem unlikely to occur again. Perhaps stupidly, I started a brand new game file and pursued the same choices (Bodhi). This time I saved well before Aran fight, but I'm at the same dead end and I cannot initiate dialogue with Bodhi regardless of the circumstances under which I kill Aran.

Are there other prerequisites to entering chapter 4 aside from the completion of the task Bodhi has assigned me? My Journal reflects the fact that I have killed Aran and should report back to Bodhi. This is my first post for any bug of any game (typically I'm capable of locating a forum on my problem and troubleshoot my own issues), but there doesn't seem to be a reported solution to this bug. Help Please!!!

Custom PC & NPC Portraits

Building on the original thread, started by @Syntia13, this is intended to be a hub to share alternate, fan-made portraits for the enhanced editions of the series. In order to keep the thread running and make it a comprehensive source for portraits, please abide by the site rules and a few guidelines:

Thread Rules

1: Respect artists' creations and their right to them. If portrait-makers ask that you not edit their work, don't. If a mistake is made, simply edit your post to remove the image, apologize, forgive and forget.
2: Do not share images for which you have not received permission from the artists, when possible.* This is particularly true of art from DeviantArt, which hosts many artists who do not want their work shared elsewhere.
3: If you request that a portrait be made, recognize that the artists in this forum do this simply because they enjoy contributing to the community. Be patient, be respectful and say thank you.
4: Be supportive! Many of the artists here are just beginning to learn how to make portraits. Be positive and constructive in your comments, and avoid pointless negativity.
5: If you are making and posting portraits, state who you used as a model (if applicable), either here or on your website. Understand that this still does not make the likeness your property, and be prepared to remove the image if so requested by the copyright holder.

*Understandably, the source of some older portraits is unknown. If in doubt, go to Google Images and drag the portrait to the search bar. You may find the artist or source through that method. Again refer to Rule 1.

Guide to Using Custom Portraits

Portraits in the enhanced editions use three images in bitmap (.bmp) format, the largest of which is only shown during the epilogue in Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal. The three sizes are 210x330, 169x266 (displayed in the character sheet) and 54x84 (displayed on the right UI bar).*

To use custom portraits for your PC:
1: Navigate to your Baldur's Gate directory in (My) Documents.
2: Drop the custom portraits into the Portraits folder.
3: In the game, select Custom when choosing a portrait and select the medium and small sizes. Alternately, if you have already begun your game, select Customize/Appearance from the character sheet.

To use custom portraits for NPCs:
1: Rename the portrait files to match the NPC whose portraits you want to replace. For example, Jaheira's portraits are named JaheiraL, JaheiraM and JaheiraS. There are some portraits in BG1 that do not conform to this, and those in BG2 have their own naming format. Consult this site.
2: Place the portraits in your override folder, located in the directory where you installed the game.

*Note that after the latest patch, the games allow a single large portrait size to be automatically adjusted to the proper sizes. I currently do not recommend this, as it causes pixelation in the small 54x84 version.

Artist Links

If you like the portraits you see here or at any of the sites below, leave a comment here or on the artist's website. We love making portraits, and we love hearing how you connect to them through the game.

Hey all,

I know that not everyone checks the modding forums here on a regular basis, so I figured a plug here in General may help get more views. Please refer to this thread

http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/33721/keeping-yoshimo-the-mod-is-now-available-for-ee-and-mac-spoiler-for-newbies-to-bg2#latest

for information about a mod named Keeping Yoshimo that @CrevsDaak and I would like to get playtested for EE and Mac. If folks wish to respond in this thread here every so often in order just to keep the thread bumped for a little while, that will not be frowned upon. ;-)

New companions off-limits?

Hi, I recently bought the enhanced edition of Baldur's Gate 2. When I got in-game I noticed that the 4 new companions had a grayed out "installed" button on them. Do I have to buy them separately? And if so, where?

Also, can I buy them after having started a new game and still add them to my party without having to start all over?

Thanks

"Advertise" Your Written Play-through(s)!

So as I'm sure we all know, there are a lot of really cool written play-throughs of the BG saga on these forums. Some of them are very challenge based, while others are more for the role-play. There are several prominent writers of these as well as a few who have just started and only have one or two of their play-throughs up. Sometimes one of the more well known writers will make a new play-through, (example: @Blackraven‌) but someone who reads all of their work will miss it and only find it a week or two later. (example: me) The idea behind this thread is that writers of these "play-throughs" can "advertise" their play-throughs, thus making for easy access for others, as well as a visible and concise back catalogue for new members of the forums. I'm not going to include my own writings in the main post, but I'll place them in the comments, same as you all. The "format" for these would be...

[Title of the thread/character's name/what kind of challenge it is/however else you'd want to title it] [release status i.e complete/BG1 complete/on break/on hiatus/ongoing/etc.]

[Link to first page of the thread]

[short description of the thread]

Any extra details or notes you might want to add beyond the description is up to you, though I don't know what you'd put in that section.

Now, I'm not sure whether to leave this in General Discussion or Challenges and Playthroughs. I think I'll leave it in General Discussion for at least a week, just so it can garner attention. Once that's done I'll toss it into C&P, since it definitely belongs in there.

With all that done, I'm going to tag a few people who I know have written play-throughs on the forums, since they'll hopefully be interested. @Lemernis@Heindrich@lolien@bengoshi@meagloth@MacHurto@BelgarathMTH@SionIV@Aurorus@Gotural@SharGuidesMyHand‌ and Blackraven (previously tagged)

Trying to keep the wisdom tome I'm supposed to give to the Umberlee priestess

I don't want to fight her if I can avoid it. I tried having Safana drink a perception potion and using PP, but she only has a skill of 40 and I haven't been able to get it after many reloads. Is there any way to finish the geas quest without the priestess' help? I considered dropping Safana and picking up Alora to try more PP. I'm pretty sure she has a high skill. But, Safana is CN and my rep is 20, so once I cut her loose, she's gone. Besides, I don't like the idea of cutting people from the party for something like this. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Note this is purely about effectiveness in terms of game mechanics.

As there are limited number of slots for the poll, I have not listed characters that I find are highly effective, but feel free to contradict me and choose other :)

Are there any traps in the city of Baldur's gate?

I've dualed Imoen and she's only about 15kxp away from getting her thief levels back. Currently, I have Safana as my thief until she does. I only just started Baldur's Gate City and think I can get her there by the time I'm done. However, I can't remember if I need a trap monkey for anything in the city itself (maybe the sewers). If not, I'd rather cut Safana loose now as she is dead weight otherwise. Anyone recall any traps during BG city quests? Thanks.

What phobia do you have? Which race will you not play?

I feel that there is some real gnomophobia on this forum sometimes. Is it just me, or is it a real and tangible thing?

This is the opposite of the many polls that have appeared asking what race is your favourite. Tell me what race it is you are most afraid to play with. The truth will out!

As a side note. I researched the names of the phobias listed. They appear to all be actually legit and real phobias... Some people have issues...

Would you like to see a hunger and thirst mechanic added to the game?

$

Good ev'n, gentlebeings! I pose to thee a question of the utmost roleplaying importance: when did CHARNAME last enjoy a hearty meal? This game is one of unparalleled immersion with plenty of wonderful roleplaying elements. However, one thing that always irked me was the severe food shortage afflicting the Sword Coast. I mean, you could wander into a tavern and have a drink -- but what about food? There was nothing on the menu! No bread, cheese, mutton -- nothing! Worse yet, I never knew if CHARNAME was chomping at the gills for some grub, or if he was already stuffed full of roast kobold! It was all left up to my imagination, which is great for roleplaying purposes, but I think the idea would do well as an actual part of the game.

With that in mind, I always thought it would be fun to include a hunger and thirst mechanic that impacts your abilities if not kept under control. As it already stands, you are penalized for not sleeping on a regular basis, and if you drink too much then you'll find yourself a wee bit tipsy. What then are the possibilities of taking it a step further by adding the necessity for food -- little travel rations you can put into your inventory, or proper meals that you can eat while resting at a tavern -- along with a simple, but appropriate hunger effect? If you don't eat, perhaps your total weight allowance drops to reflect fatigue, or your CON score might receive a -1 to show your low energy. Eating would of course neutralize these temporary penalties. The same would apply for drinking, which could be accomplished by carrying a waterskin. I realize that, for story purposes, the game assumes you spend time eating and drinking whenever you rest. However, I think it would be a nice touch to have such a feature separate, much like when playing tabletop "Dungeons and Dragons". It would certainly make you more wary of wandering away from town while ill-equipped!

What say you, friends?

Multiplayer Shenanigans of CrevsDaak and Quartz

We have this multiplayer game that's been stretched out over, like, a long time. I don't even know anymore. But I've been taking some screenshots over time. Hopefully more will be on their way. Enjoy the silliness.

Characters! Main character Sarilien, a human Swashbuckler who will dual-class to Fighter ... EVENTUALLY.
Awdatsquartz, a rather attractive young half-elf Berserker wielding a big-ass sword.
Darian Daak, a half-elven Conjurer who dies a lot!
Shanai Larkface, with a name like that she is unmistakably a beautiful elven Fighter/Druid! ELFBABE.bmp
Nathan Hale. His only regret is that he has one life to give to the party. Except he does, because he's been raised several times on his numerous suicide missions (that usually succeed actually!). He and Awdatsquartz constantly vie for the top kills percentage; Half-Orc Assassins with 19 Strength are amazingly kickass. He throws knives, stabs with knives ... he likes knives.
And a test guy that resembles an upcoming NPC mod that CrevsDaak and I are working on, basically to see if he's any good in terms of gameplay/stats or not. That's all I'm gonna say.

Mazzy v. Rasaad v. Anomen v. Jaheira v. Neera - Just can't decide

$

Playing a mostly good (Jaheira and early Anomen excluded) run through and just can't decide who to leave out. Although I played the original BG when it was released, this is my first BG2 playthrough and trying not to look up much. Only in Chapter 2, although closing out a lot of quests before advancing.

Party that I'm currently sold on:

Main - Dwarven Fighter/Cleric from BG1, strong, wise and hardy, but no dex and mistake of spec in shields (working on changing that).
Keldorn
Nalia (replaced by Imoen eventually due to space constraints)

Members I think I'd probably like to keep:
Anomen (especially now that he's good and with increased wisdom)
Jaheira (messed up and gave her two handed instead of two weapon with first prof, but still feel loyal to her since she's been there since the beginning.

I was originally going to go with Rasaad as the sixth since I like the idea of a monk and used to play PnP with that class, but then I found Mazzy and liked her as well (although I'll work on setting her up to dual short swords and use her bow since she already specialized in short swords). Then there's also Neera, who I romanced in BGEE. Another consideration is that I'd on occassion like to pick up people for just the quest they are initially associated with (Valygar, others?). I don't want to weaken an end game character by having them miss out on exp though.

So conflicted and mainly venting frustration, but opinions are also welcome. Ha.
