I don't know if you know already but some of the original characters make references to things like.. well Khalid for example references Porky Pig and Chia Pet. Alora and Xzar reference Ren and Stimpy, with the Happy Happy Joy Joy song. Xzar quotes J. Robert Oppenheimer. Shar-Teel references Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator and Eldoth quotes Oscar Wilde. The list goes on.

Well, I was hoping for that the new characters would also do this, though I have a feeling that they won't.

It's been bothering me so I decided to write about it.

The Black Pits!!!

Is there anyone else out there looking forward to the Black Pits? I know it's not a part of the Bhallspwan Saga, but it still looks great and has a lot of opportunities for tactical combat and it might even have some for role play purposes. IE: You, a great half orc shaman (fighter/cleric) and your five barbarian bodyguards got kidnaped by a mad drow making you fight for your freedom against a horde of creature in a bloodied arena!

It would also be fun to try some kits we never tried before and create weird parties with a lot of special abilities that might get boring to use in a single player multiplayer campain. like a group of 4-6 jesters, 4-6 raging barbarians, 6 wildmages ;), 6 priest of helm with their magical sword power ( or whatever cleric kit it was) 6 gnomes because gnomes are so awesome!

Another reason I might play the Black Pits before BG:EE ( HERETIC burn it!!!) is because i'm still unsure what caracter to make for my first playthrough.

I hope i'm not the only one looking forward for this mysterious adventure X in the underdark: THE BLACK PITS!!!!

I'm just curious, does slow poison or one of the other healing spells "cure" drunkeness? :-)

That way if I had any of this spells left over before resting in an Inn my party could get roaring drunk and not have a hangover in the morning (oh I wish I could do that I real life...)

What is Kivan's sexuality? - Discuss

This was inspired by the thread about Minsc's sexuality. This poll is meant to be lighthearted and is not intended to offend anyone. Please do not turn this into a flame war or anything similar.

I read Kivan's biography and it mentions his "mate" several times, but makes no reference to any pronouns, which got me thinking that it is possible he isn't straight. I mean, it would be really easy for the writers to have included pronouns and the biography's writing style would have seemed more natural if they had. Also, why refer to Kivan's significant other as a "mate" and not a girlfriend/wife unless there was a reason not to (such as his spouse not being female, for instance)?

Kivan's biography is:

"When asked about his past KIVAN reveals that he hails from the forest of Shilmista, though he has not visited his homeland in some time. He has instead been traveling the world driven by the darkest of obsessions: revenge. Kivan and his mate Deheriana were apparently on a romantic sojourn years ago when they were waylaid by a group of Brigands. They were captured and tortured for the amusement of Tazok, the half-ogre that led the attack. Kivan eventually escaped, but Deheriana did not survive the encounter. Kivan is a man of few words, and obviously does not make friends easily. Likely he will not take much pleasure from life until he has revenged the death of his love."

I just read somewhere (here: http://www.pocketplane.net/volothamp/chap4c.htm) there that halflings get +1 THAC0 *and* +1 Damage bonuses when using slings, but I thought it was just +1 THAC0 like elves with bows and swords, could someone confirm which is correct? Thanks

[DLC] Question / Proposal for DLC respecting and involving existing mods

$

Hi everybody :)

I was wondering if it might be possible to bring together some most beloved mods and the idea of DLC.

Nearly everybody who's been playing BG1 and then BG2 and then either BGT or Tutu was crying for banter and the fullfilment of some unsolved paths in BG1.
Help arised: BG1NPCProject. Unfinished Business. And lots more, certainly, but for this question I only want to focus on these as an example (with full respects to any other mod out there!).

As I understood, editing content itself of BG1 for BG:EE is not possible due to licenses or similar.

Now, if that's not possible, would it be possible to come up with DLC(s) or something similar (somehow shipping around licensing issues) containing those mods in some way?

To me (assuming that loads of other players think similar) BG:EE sounds cool, very cool. But personally I'd still rather use my old cds and BGT (or Tutu) to bring BG1 _content wise_ to BG2 standards, as long as BG:EE does not come up with the most 'missing' contents for BG1 in a convenient, player friendly way.

I heard there will be banter with the new added NPCs and I totally DO apreciate that, but still, when it comes to me, this doesn't feel like the 'definition of done'. It still feels kinda... well... unfinished :)

Don't get me wrong, I do want BG:EE, I do want BG2:EE, and I DOOOO want BG3. So be sure I'll support when and where I can, but still...

...what do you think?

Regards,
Manduran

[Arcane] Variety is the Spice of Life

This thread has been prompted as a result of the new screenshots posted by @Icallhimlecobra (thank you!), although the idea has been churning in my head for a long time.

Arcane battles often prove to be the most challenging ones (particularly in BG2). But after a certain number of playthroughs there is a predictability in the patterns of most Mages. They generally have similar spell triggers; a similar casting order; similar summons; similar protections and offensive spells. This is most poignant - I feel - with Liches.

Don't get me wrong - they're still not simple battles!

But in one new screenshot we see a Sharran Monk cast 'Chill Touch'. This made my ears perk up.

Maybe Mages might forfeit the use of some of the more powerful spells, but would it not cause the players to take a step back if some of the new Mage encounters incorporated spells that the player had not anticipated? Things like 'Stinking Cloud'; 'Slow'; 'Contagion'; 'Sphere of Chaos'; perhaps a naughty spell trigger 'Mass Invisibility' at the start of combat in order to allow the Mage to buff up, while giving his foot soldiers time to advance without fear of archers (ie.Mazzy!)?

Albeit this discussion may be more relevant for BG:SoA, a much more magically-charged world. Sooner rather than later, I figured!

Is this 'Chill Touch' screenshot the first of many unexpected arcane applications for our new foes? :D

Rasaad yn Bashir

There doesn't seem to be a discussion of Rasaad in the English language forums yet, thought I'd start one.

He looks like an interesting character, and the new area included in his personal quest (the Cloudpeaks) offers a fun change of direction. We've also seem few Calimshite characters ingame, so more depth is good.

He's also a monk. We have not had any official monk/barbarian/sorcerer NPCs before, so yay for variety. I enjoy playing monks but have done a full BGT run with one before and the BG1 part was pretty nasty. Unless there's a rework of how they level he could be a bit underpowered.

Casting magic should cost gold

In D&D you need certain materials to cast certain spells. (diamond dust for stone skin for example)

However, BG series removed this all together resulting in ridiculous ownage by mages. A level 20 mage can toy around with level 50 fighter using a timestop, and a level 30 mage can kill 2~3 level 50 fighters alone with a timestop and chain contingency. and spells are literally infinite since you can rest as often as you like without time constraints.

I suggest we emulate D&D magic material requirement by requiring gold to cast magic, depending on its level.

a practical formula could be something like gold spent for casting: 10 * square of spell level.

So level 1 spell will cost 10 gold each time its casted, level 5 spell 250 gold, and level 9 spell will cost 810 gold each.

This will enable players to use magic without throwing 10 high-level spells in each fight.

The game doesn't make much sense in a way that you are casting rare magic spells way too often rather than saving them up for tough fights. What's the point of encounters against weak monsters if each time you just throw a horrid wilting and the fight is over in 1 sec?

If this is to be implemented, cleric spells will have to use gold as well for balancing reasons. They will cost less(since they only have up to level 7) though.

With a mage you don't need a tank. Solo mage can beat the entire game(from BG2 start) without taking 1 hp damage. A mage can replace rogues with protection from energy, elements + stoneskin and magic deflection which will ignore all traps(even better than a rogue, IMO!) I can simply run through traps without taking any damages at all. A mage can also become an insane DPS *warrior* with tensir's change + vampiric touch + dark blade+haste which will grant the mage 2 times attack per round with 250HP and 30~40 damage per hit.

A mage is potentially better stealth, tank, warrior, rogue than specialized classes..... that's just plain wrong.

I play a mage/sorc most of the time and if you know how to use them they are gamebreakingly powerful.

This power should come at a cost.

Trent Oster Interview at Sorcerer's Place

I just came across this, its from yesterday:

http://www.sorcerers.net/Main/Articles/baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition-interview.php

8. SP: There’s been talk of DLC being released post launch. How many DLCs ideally would you like to see released for BG:EE?

Oster: I'd like to see a lot of DLC released post-launch. The Sword Coast is a great location for adventure and BG:EE offers a very fun type of tactical gameplay which cannot be had anywhere else. Our plan is to do at least one expansion-pack scale add-on and see how the market responds. If people like what we're doing and buy the DLC, we'll make more.

9. SP: What sort of ideas do you have in mind for the DLC? New missions? New companions? New graphical enhancements? Other?

Oster: Yes, all of the above. I think we can do smaller DLC in the form of new companions, new assets and larger DLC in the form of full blown adventures.

I like the Idea of "expansion-pack scale add-on"!

Whirlwind Attack - Dual Wielding or Single Weapon Fighting?

$

So, here I sits, idly planning a Swashbuckling Mage, and it occurs to me; Swashies get Whirlwind Attack once they hit HLAs, giving them a cool ten attacks per round.

Now as the title says, what do you think would be better for a Swashbuckler planning to Whirlwind Attack? A single weapon fighter, or a Dual Wielder? Or perhaps even both, switching from one for day-to-day combat to the other for whirling?

Some relevant trivia:

Whirlwind, unlike the improved version Fighters can get, always has a -4 to hit penalty, but still gives 10 attacks/round.

Swashbucklers can put 3 points into Two Weapon Fighting, meaning no penalties with either hand, and an extra attack generally, but this costs 3/9 of their points, and specialisation is already taking up 2 per weapon, so it's pretty expensive, as far as proficiencies go.

Meanwhile Single Weapon Fighting costs 1 point, and when SWF is satisfied, gives +1 AC and critical hits on a 19 or 20. Since Swashies can specialise, putting points into SWF instead of TWF means specialising in an additional weapon, but given most people only use single specific weapon types the whole game, that may not be worth it to you.

By the time a Swashbuckler is level 25 (the max multiple of 5 for a multi-classed thief/mage) they have a neat +5 to hit/+5 damage per hit, regardless of weapon.

I'm not sure how Improved Haste or weapons like Belm would interact with it, but Whirlwind with two weapons I believe would give 9 attacks with the primary weapon, and 1 attack with the off-hand weapon.

Thief proficiencies can only go into: Short Swords, Long Swords, Katanas, Daggers, Short Bows, Scimitar/etc, Darts, and Light Crossbows, with use any item they can indeed equip Crom Faeyr, but they cannot be proficient with it, something worth bearing in mind if you enjoy rocking max strength all over the place.

Personally I'm leaning towards SWF for double the number of criticals, but I'm very happy to be proven wrong.

The dilemma with today's Dungeons and Dragons Artwork.

Now maybe this is just a generational thing of interpretation, but when it came to the 70s late 80s and 90s DnD artwork, they nailed it down when it came to this:

http://dungeonsmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/fred-fields-red-wizard1-239x300.jpg
http://dungeonsmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/jeff-easley-dmg-220x300.jpg

http://mygirlfriendisadm.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/caldwell00.jpg
http://www.blackgate.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/pic549862_md.jpg

It's alittle hard to find these images, but they showed real skill of art without the use of computers nowadays. All I see now in Dnd to mostly borderline cartoonish styles. This is just a personal preference more than anything, but I would love to see a return of the old styles.

I think that's why I loved Baldur's Gate and Icewind dale so much, though I know computers might have been used, they kept a certain style fitting for DnD even if the style is alittle different, and it didn't go straight cartoon y like. :-)

Maybe it was the feather-hair look of the 80s that put it away in the past? idk lol.
