Was going to post this in Help for New Players, but I guess that doesn't really fit - I originally played BG when it first came out but was a bit too young to really process the rules and tactics needed to get the most out of it (I was 12 and used to much easier games). But I loved the story and just CLUA consoled my way through the hard parts.

Looking to do a proper, legit playthrough this time (almost finished with a Kensai run in BG:EE). I understand that the Kensai/Thief is one of the more powerful builds, but Blade looks really fun. How do they hold up/compare from beginning to endgame?

I'm leaning toward the Kenthief, but I plan on a full-party run and don't want to spend half of SoA nerfed. Any tips?

I am level 1 Paladin - Cavalier - I want to use 2 h weapons.. 2h swords to be exact.

Is the red square a definite class restriction or possible level restriction. or both?

WHen can a paladin cavalier use standard 2h sword?

Friends and simians!

I am gearing up for one of my first hardcore RP runs of BG1, which will obviously be evil, because that's just how we roll in these parts. As part of it, I'm plotting out the basic relationships the characters in my party are likely to have with each other, and I figured I would ask the people here whoa re far more versed in D&D history and lore than I am.

Basically, what kind of organisational relationship do the Red Wizards and the Zhentarim have during the time of BG1? I doubt it'd very friendly, but how hostile are they? Have there been major conflicts between the organisations, or minor disputes over territory?

I'm asking, obviously, because I'm planning to have both Edwin and Xzar/Montaron in my endgame party, and I'm not sure what sort of general atmosphere they would have. I can understand X+M being reasonably okay with Edwin, seeing as they are there on a mission to uncover why the Zhents are being blamed for the Iron Crisis, and co-opting a Red Wizard (via Charname) to do their bidding would probably be fine for them. It isn't like they're helping Thayan interests in the region or anything. Edwin on the otehr hand, might be more wary of helping out Zhent agents, and let's be honest he's probably bright enough to figure out their institutional affiliations even before Sorcerous Sundries. However, more to the point, how would the Red Wizards react if they discovered Edwin was aiding the Zhents, however minimally? How deep is the excrement that he would find himself in? Are we talking a minor shoe inconvenience or a full-on dung-boarding?

But basically I'm looking for tips and pointers on how these characters would relate on a general level, without the massive personality clashes, from the more knowledgable among us. :)

Can't seem to complete two quest in the keep. One for a cross bow and the other for an identity scroll.

I didn't expect as much banter with the new characters as there is in BG2, but I haven't had any new content between the new characters and the originals with the exception of a single interjection by Minsc during a banter with Neera. More surprisingly, I don't think Neera and Rasaad have ever communicated (I'm not using dorn). I have Jaheira, Imoen, Minsc, Neera, and Rasaad as party members and haven't heard a peep of interaction between them (although the new ones do interact with me). They also don't comment on any in-game events except for their personal quests - it's this normal? What have been some of your experiences with new character interactions in BG:EE?

I was wondering if some of the chapters made you feel kinda bored or simply anxious to move on. I usually feel like that on chapter five, when we get to Baldur's Gate . I don't know why, but exploring the city isn't as exciting as hunting bandits around the coast...

The game itself runs just fine. I can see everything, hear everything, its not glitchy or lagging. The problem is that all characters (Mine and NPCs) attack, move and cast very slowly. Cut scenes and dialogue go at regular speed and so do sound effects, but it takes a level 3 jaheira up to a minute to cast 1 spell!!!! Now from what I've played of this game it looks like it would be really fun, except for the fact that it takes up to 5 minutes to kill 3 Xert.

If Kivan deliberately delivers the party into the hands of the bandits in the Wood of Sharp Teeth in order to (try to) get at Tazok, is that a breach of his ethos as a Ranger to always protect innocent travelers? Should he Fall for that?

Just wanted to give forum members a heads-up on a really nice set of alternate portraits by a friend of mine.

I'm likely in the minority, but despite playing BG dozens of times over the years, I've always hated the original portraits. I don't want anime/manga style pictures, but I don't feel the inhabitants of the game should be grimacing, pox-ridden, wart-faced monstrosities either. Alora is a cute halfling, not a withered old hag. Coran should be a gorgeous ladies-man, not a warped Hall-of-Mirrors grotesquery. Even the ones that are not too hideous, like Imoen and Branwen's original portraits, are much too old for the characters they are supposed to portray. Branwen's not in her 40's, and Imoen is not a soccer mom, she's a perky teen, 17-18 tops.

Kaila's portraits are great - classic fantasy but not TOO fantastic. I don't think the anime look suits BG, and while I personally like the Boris Vallejo chainmail-bikini look, that doesn't suit BG either.

I think her reworkings of the classic characters are lovely, and accurate reflect the characters involved. We have Jahiera's trademark scowl, Xzar's unsettling stare and the bug-eyed weirdness of Tiax. Xan and Coran now actually look like high-charisma guys. The females are attractive without being airbrushed supermodels.

I love being able to play the game with a unified look and art style, whether I'm playing a MP party or recruiting NPCs. There's a full range here, familiars, gnomes, half-orcs, halflings, the lot.

Hope some of you find it useful anyway.

I started BG with an Avenger, I'm on the third level of the Nashkel mines and I'm underwhelmed with the lack of power in this build (mind you, I haven't levelled yet, but I think I would have preferred one of the fighter, cleric or ranger kits). Is there an easy way (short of restarting or multi-/dual-classing) to change my class? Thanks.

Hey. I've just been playing around with the non-enhanced edition and got around to doing my solo mage run and have decided to import it from 1 to 2 to carry on the adventure.
Where the warrior is given the option to choose Berserker/Kensai/etc, I am not given the ability to choose Sorcerer.

Does anyone know why this might be? Cheers.
