It remains a mystery why the old sage Gorion decided to leave the safe haven of Candlekeep with his young ward CHARNAME, or why they were attacked shortly after leaving the fortress library. All that we know is that Gorion was found brutally slain a short distance from Candlekeep's walls, and that his ward, upon arriving at the Friendly Arm Inn, was killed by a wizard named Tarnesh. The motives for the killings remain unknown.
However, sages speculate that the killings were somehow related to the so-called "Bhaalspawn Crisis" which culminated about six months later with the destruction of Saradush and the ensuing battles throughout Tethyr, and with the ascension of the new God of Murder.
