BG Literature Recommendations

What would you recommend for PnP / Literature reading for someone wishing to read the material upon which the game was based to improve their insight into the game? Assume they had no prior knowledge of D&D (I think there is a Book D&D for dummies out there but that is another story...)

Also please recommend books that do not have Abdel Adrian in them....
