The DLC Watch Thread

After a short search the last thread I found with a similar topic for discussion was last posted in over 8 months ago, so instead of necromancing it I figured I'd go ahead and start a new one. The point of this thread is to collect what we know about any possible future BG:EE or BG2:EE DLC content, and perhaps discuss what we'd like to see.

A year and a half after the first Enhanced Edition and six months after the second one, we still haven't seen an official announcement pertaining to expansion content. However, there have been bits and pieces along the way that are worth knowing about if you're interested in more Baldur's Gate content. I have found some of this information, but I'm sure there's also some that I missed. Here's what I gathered so far:

1. Around the time BG1:EE was released, there was talk from official Beamdog people of Adventure Y, a handle for expansion content for BG1:EE. Two months ago @Dee confirmed that Adventure Y was still in the plans.

2. This Tweet:
There seems to be some current activity involving new voiced content at Overhaul Games. We don't yet know whether it's related to Baldur's Gate, but I'm willing to hope to think that maybe it probably is. Conceivably.

So, yeah. That's about all I've heard. What about you guys?

Beamdog client vs. Steam?

Hi everyone, longtime lurker here. I'm stepping out of the shadows and moving un-silently to ask a question I haven't seen addressed elsewhere.

What is the difference between the Steam and Beamdog versions of the game in terms of economic impact to the developer? Do they receive less money if I buy through Steam and thus give Valve some portion of the sale? I'd rather support the BGEE team than Valve, but I also would love to have the Steam overlay available in game so I can chat with friends.

Will there be a Steam key made available to those who purchase through Beamdog, or vice versa? (AFAIK this never happened for BGEE because of issues with Atari.)

Last question, unrelated to clients: have we seen Hexxat's stat block anywhere?

Here's to a night of debauchery and destruction on Nov. 15th!

As I learn more from this forum, I realize how much about the game I didn't know about. There were items, strategies and spells that could have made my life a lot easier against various monsters. There were dialogue options I had never been given. Easter Eggs I never knew about. Etc, etc.

I was interested in seeing this kind of topic ever since my boy @Quartz‌ said that he never made Crom Faeyr. So I made this thread for us all to confess our Baldur's Gate sins. Come and admit that you never completed your stronghold, you've never even heard of Kangaxx, never killed Firkraag or are still dying to know where Hull misplaced his longsword.

I'll begin:

Confession: I have never done the Viconia romance.

Confession: I have never played a thief character.

Share the best and worst alignment charts!

Pretty self explanatory. For anyone who doesn't know, an alignment chart is, something (I guess you could call it a subset of meme?) that uses pop culture characters to explain dnd alignment. It's very simple. These don't quite fit into the meme thread, so I've made a separate thread. Let's see...

I think one of the most true to the system I've seen.

I love this one. Very clever.

Does anyone know where this comes from? Is it a newer dnd edition, or did someone just make it up? I kinda like it. At least someone agrees that the system could use another axis:P

This is one I made. Sorry if the captions aren't very legible. I mean to redo it sometime.

Has anyone ever tried a "no stealing" playthrough?

I'm thinking of doing my next BG:EE run as an Inquisitor (mainly because I'm looking for an excuse to try out this portrait here,
image).

I played as a paladin numerous times in vanilla BG, but that was back in my powergaming days, when I would max all my relevant stats to 18, typically have only 3 intelligence, and basically play as chaotic neutral no matter what my class or alignment (i.e: trying out every quest possible, killing innocents for their gear, etc.).

With the release of BG:EE, I've decided that I want to try RPing characters more. I recently completed a playthrough as a neutral good ranger. Although I typically tried to make "good" choices whenever possible, I still continued my standard practice of breaking into every house that I could, ignoring the people who insist that I leave, stealing everything in sight, and then running (or sneaking) out before the guards catch me. However, I found this to be very immersion-breaking, almost just mindless at times - and that was as only a neutral good character. I just can't justify this sort of behavior as a lawful good character.

I know that some people will suggest that I just send my thief into houses alone and let them do the ransacking by themselves, so that it seems as though the stealing is being done without my party leader's knowledge. However, I'm not sure that I can convince myself that any actions undertaken by my party members are being done without my leader's knowledge. Besides, my thief will most likely be Imoen, who is also neutral good, so that I will run into the same moral dilemma as I did with my ranger.

I'm also considering the possibility of taking this a step further and forgoing even the act of breaking into houses in the first place - after all, what is the point of breaking open doors and listening to people yell at you, especially if you don't intend to loot the place anyway?

If anyone here has ever gone so far in their RPing as to forgo stealing, what sort of impact did it have on your adventure?

Any Real Difference What Room Type You Pick at the Inn?

Hey,

Just curious if anybody has noticed whether the room type you pick makes any real difference. In theory, the more expensive the room, the more efficient your rest is supposed to be (I think, anyway). It's not like I've done any extensive testing but what type of room you pick doesn't seem to matter. Of course, once you start making money the rooms are so cheap it becomes a non-factor but I still wonder anyway. Anybody?

So... I gave heals, improved celerity, stoneskin and imp. invisibility to Merinid and he killed Tathlyn.

* Merinid is in the Drow Bar, underworld, and he will tell you an alternative tale of Drow history (he is a worshipper of Vhaerun). This so annoys Tathlyn that he kills Merenid for his blasphemy.

Anyone knows if there is a follow up to this encounter that took a different turn of events?

Custom PC & NPC Portraits

Building on the original thread, started by @Syntia13, this is intended to be a hub to share alternate, fan-made portraits for the enhanced editions of the series. In order to keep the thread running and make it a comprehensive source for portraits, please abide by the site rules and a few guidelines:

Thread Rules

1: Respect artists' creations and their right to them. If portrait-makers ask that you not edit their work, don't. If a mistake is made, simply edit your post to remove the image, apologize, forgive and forget.
2: Do not share images for which you have not received permission from the artists, when possible.* This is particularly true of art from DeviantArt, which hosts many artists who do not want their work shared elsewhere.
3: If you request that a portrait be made, recognize that the artists in this forum do this simply because they enjoy contributing to the community. Be patient, be respectful and say thank you.
4: Be supportive! Many of the artists here are just beginning to learn how to make portraits. Be positive and constructive in your comments, and avoid pointless negativity.
5: If you are making and posting portraits, state who you used as a model (if applicable), either here or on your website. Understand that this still does not make the likeness your property, and be prepared to remove the image if so requested by the copyright holder.

*Understandably, the source of some older portraits is unknown. If in doubt, go to Google Images and drag the portrait to the search bar. You may find the artist or source through that method. Again refer to Rule 1.

Guide to Using Custom Portraits

Portraits in the enhanced editions use three images in bitmap (.bmp) format, the largest of which is only shown during the epilogue in Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal. The three sizes are 210x330, 169x266 (displayed in the character sheet) and 54x84 (displayed on the right UI bar).*

To use custom portraits for your PC:
1: Navigate to your Baldur's Gate directory in (My) Documents.
2: Drop the custom portraits into the Portraits folder.
3: In the game, select Custom when choosing a portrait and select the medium and small sizes. Alternately, if you have already begun your game, select Customize/Appearance from the character sheet.

To use custom portraits for NPCs:
1: Rename the portrait files to match the NPC whose portraits you want to replace. For example, Jaheira's portraits are named JaheiraL, JaheiraM and JaheiraS. There are some portraits in BG1 that do not conform to this, and those in BG2 have their own naming format. Consult this site.
2: Place the portraits in your override folder, located in the directory where you installed the game.

*Note that after the latest patch, the games allow a single large portrait size to be automatically adjusted to the proper sizes. I currently do not recommend this, as it causes pixelation in the small 54x84 version.

What would you like to see in an NPC mod.

I would like to try to approach this from a bit of a different angle. I have seen many post about what is a “good” NPC or “bad” NPC mod. This approach makes me a bit uncomfortable for several reasons. For one thing it seems to often get boiled down to an intense discussion naming a few different mods that some people have really taken a dislike to. I have even seen people who like such mods being labeled as having “bad taste”. From that point on, I see few other opinions being expressed.

Without giving the name of specific mods, what I would really like to know is what people would like to see more of. If you could write a mod, what are some of the things you would include. Remembering of course, that all peoples opinions are valid.

Just a few examples:
More interactions with other party members.
More personal quests.
Having the NPC fit in nicely with the PC’s quest.
Humor.
More serious situations.
More romance.
Unique NPC equipment.
Unique classes.
Mature content.
PG content.
Or anything else that you have always wanted to see.

[BGII:EE] Global translation status (with %) and a professional translator perspective on it

$

Hi all, as you all know by now, Beamdog, publisher of Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, decided to follow the "free" crowdsourcing road regarding the translation of BG2EE. Some days ago it became known that the translation of new material for Italian sums up to approx. 400.000 words.

All translated for free. Or should I say: "not" translated "yet".

In any case, I feel it's important to give everyone a professional translator point of view on the matter at hand.
I've been working in the industry for over 15 years, so I know what I'm talking about.

On a side note, it would be great if translators from the different languages could provide us with a words breakdown of every language involved and how far they are from completion. I won't always keep this post updated, but I will if I have the time. Completion percentage should match the last edited date for this post.

Italian: About 25%
German: Less than 10%
French: ???
Spanish: approx 50%

Ok, lets go!

**********
1) TIME
- A professional translator averages about 2,500 words in 8 hours of work.
- 394.241 words, divided by 2,500, is 158. So it's 158 days of work for a single translator working full-time.

More than 1260 hours of work. And here we are, of course, considering a professional translator speed, not the probably slower amateur one.

These are big numbers. We're not talking about translating a indie game in a week: this is a -huge- effort.

Was the community alerted of the number of WORDS that had to be translated? Did the community know it would've been a very time consuming task, spanning over many months, if not years?

2) COSTS
Do you know how much a translator gets paid for 400.000 words? About 20.000 Euros.
Do you know how much a publisher pays for such a translation, delivered and reviewed by a professional agency? About 35k-38k Euros, maybe more.
Do you know how much every translator out there gets damaged, when there's people willing to translate for free something that normally gets paid 40k Euros? Of course there's not a precise answer to this question, but I'll go with an approximate one: A LOT.

3) PERSONAL CONSIDERATIONS
I consider really absurd that there's people willing to work for free on this project, especially considering the staggering amount of words. 10k, maybe even 20k words to translate would've been still a quite large amount, but a fan translation would've felt... somewhat sensible or at the very least fairer to the translators community. But 400k words?

Furthermore Beamdog itself (in the person of Andrea Colombo) announced on a forum that: "Beamdog is committed to offer the community the best possible translation quality for both chapters of the saga, and intends to complete the task." This sounds "weird". "Beamdog" is committed? But then are we talking about a "fan translation" or is this maybe a "zero cost" official translation? Very hard to say, at this point.

Usually, I'm the first to salute with enthusiasm fan translations of old games. They generally cover games that already ended their market life-span, so a community effort is very much appreciated in these cases. But here we're talking about a fan-made translation which will generate additional sales thanks to its existence. Honestly, I don't feel like endorsing who decides to work free on these premises. Those who accept to work on this task for free (absolutely in good faith I'm sure), owe lots to all the people who studied and trained hard to become professional translators. Please let me add that this is not a crusade "against Beamdog", but against the overall crowdsourcing approach, which is being followed by other companies as well (inxile's Wasteland 2 comes to mind).

The low completion percentage for Italian (only about 23%) is the only ray of light in the whole story: it helps understanding that this approach is hardly sustainable and that relying on fans on such huge volumes, only means risking that the translation never gets done at all.

All of the above said with the due respect for everyone's work. You know, that something that helps people feed themselves and their children.

Furthermore, these are Trent Oster's words (dated 2012), co-founder of Beamdog:

http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/11/16/baldurs-gate-contains-close-to-a-million-words-of-dialog-and-how-fan-translations-helped-the-enhanced-edition/

"The thing that gets me the most is that—I mean, you can get translations done, and it’s not crazy expensive to do, but these are passionate fans of the series, they know the ins-and-outs, they know the little details, and they’re doing it because they love it. The end result is just— the quality is so much higher. The attention to detail is so much higher. They know the terms, they know what THAC0 means and how it should be framed in their language to be understandable to someone who don’t know the rules necessarily.

I just think an engaged community can do so much better of a job than just a paid contractor in this case."

Is Trent still of the same opinion? I sincerely hope not.
A professional service, for starters, would've translated the additional content already, and -breaking news- a lot of game translators are gamers, and a very large percentage of it plays CRPGs regularly. As a gaming translator, I think Trent's words were a bit disrespectful of our job.
What happened so far with BG2:EE is, actually, the opposite of what Trent said.

What happened demonstrated that a community can -only do so much when there's 400k words to translate- and it's -absolutely unreliable- as far as completion time and quality are concerned.

I hope developers and publishers can learn from this story that, apart from being ethically arguable on commercial products, crowdsourcing translations is an extremely risky affair. A lot of people bought the game on the premise that there "would've been" a translation. I can't blame them for being angry, now that it's obvious that the translation (at least from some languages) could not finish at all.

I hope this post can raise awareness and stimulate an honest and fair discussion about how the BG2:EE translation has been handled and how the community perceives crowdsourcing on commercial products.

I want to create my own tripleclass char.

In Baldur’s Gate I, Imoen’s stats allow her to be dual-classed into a Thief/Mage. Many people like this option, and choose to take advantage of it. My question is, would most people like the option to dual-class a Thief into a Thief/Mage or Thief/Fighter, with a mod NPC?

Suggestions for a female blackguard pic?

This is essentially the reverse of the "I need paladin pic as epic as my blackguard one" thread.

I have this pic that I intend to use for a paladin (probably inquisitor) playthrough,

However, I'm also toying with running a separate "evil" playthrough at the same time, so I'm looking for a female warrior pic that screams "evil!" just as much as the above pic screams "righteousness." Any suggestions?
